Betting Advice for Craps

CINDY: We now do a deep dive into our craps-playing and craps-betting advice.

ABBY: First off, we are conservative players.

CINDY: And we realize that many, if not most, craps players prefer to be somewhat more action-oriented players.

ABBY: Action-player in the casino administrators’ minds means players who make many different types of bets, most of them bad bets, thereby giving the casino huge advantages over such “action” players. We prefer to enjoy this most enjoyable game by making bets that give us a decent chance of beating the house. We make bets with low house edges and we don’t make many bets at the same time.

CINDY: Right. Now, we are at the come-out roll. We will bet the Pass Line and when the shooter establishes his or her point we will place as much in odds as we can afford.

ABBY: We might go up on two or three numbers overall. We’ll have the Pass Line bet and one or two Come bets with as much as we can afford in odds.

CINDY: We want the lower amount on the Pass and Come and the most money on the odds since the odds is a bet with no house edge. We do lose on the Pass and Come bets over time but we get off with no house edge on the Odds. That’s the way to do it. Most in odds.

ABBY: During the come-out roll, do not make any bets other than the Pass Line bet. Don’t do Any Craps or other bets to “protect” your Pass Line bet. You merely give the casino more money by doing such a thing. For some reason, too many players think they can protect their bets by making other bets. Can’t happen.

CINDY: What about all those other bets on the layout? What about them?

ABBY: You’ll hear craps players shout as they throw their chips on the layout and boisterously place any number of bets. You can see that some players want an amazing number of numbers when they are playing. All those numbers, except placing the 6 and 8, come in with high to huge house edges. They almost guarantee that the players making such bets have very little chance of beating the game for any period of time.

CINDY: The higher the house edge on a craps bet the higher the chance your bankroll will suffer some very noticeable damages. The higher the edge you try to buck the better the chance that buck will kick you in the head.

ABBY: The joy of craps is the fact that all right side players, meaning those players rooting for the shooter to make numbers, will cheer and clap as numbers are hit. There is a strong community feeling during the game when a shooter is making numbers.

CINDY: Except for darkside (don’t) players. Thankfully, there aren’t many of them.

ABBY: It is rare but it can happen that another player might give you advice. Usually, it’s bad advice. I just respond that what they are saying is interesting “and I’ll give it some thought when I have the time.”

CINDY: This is advice for women who want to play craps but are intimidated by the fact that you won’t see many other women playing the game. Craps has been a man’s game ever since it made its way from the South to the North. World War II solidified the game as a male’s domain. Women have stayed away from it.

ABBY: Our loss! You want to give craps a try. It is exciting and a real challenge. Just enjoy and don’t be discouraged that you are usually surrounded by men. Most of them are nice even if some seem to be idiots.

CINDY: There are plenty of idiots everywhere you look!

ABBY: Okay, when you are betting and winning, the tendency on the part of many players is to raise their bets. Don’t bother with that. You put out more money and the casino edge works against that money.

CINDY: Bottom line? Ladies, come on, play craps. And to all craps players, only bet the low house edge bets and there aren’t very many of those.
ABBY: Go get them!
