Ask the Slot Expert: How do video poker machines deal cards?

3 April 2013
I feel that I have a pretty good knowledge of video poker and I play it frequently, but I do have a few questions. As I understand it the chances of actually being dealt a Royal Flush is 1 in 650,000, but what are the odds of drawing into a Royal Flush? Second question: When playing video poker, the first five cards are dealt and the next five are in waiting. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot players should learn to play table games

27 March 2013
Just read the letter that John sent you about slots on 11/14/12. It seems that John is a pretty sharp guy as far as asking questions about slots. If he could only channel that by learning to play basic strategy in blackjack where the house edge is one-half percent over the player, or even learn to count cards where he would actually have an edge over the house, he would be a lot better off. ... Ask the Slot Expert: 'Proof' that player's cards affect results on slot machines

20 March 2013
Hey John, I, for one, believe it is illegal for the casino to control a machine, but I still believe the tracking cards we play with allow it to control the payouts on machines. It's like logging into your computer. I have held the highest-level card at a casino in my area for the past 10 to 12 years. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: May I claim my wife's free slot play?

13 March 2013
John, All slots work with RNGs to produce the location of any given symbol on the screen. I was curious how this works in conjunction with the required payout. If the machine MUST pay at least 91 percent return, how does the system combine the payout requirement with the random component required? ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Do racino slots pay less than casino slots?

6 March 2013
Do racino slots pay less than casino slots? Are they different systems from each other? The answer to both questions is: maybe. I checked the payback information posted on the American Casino Guide site. In some cases, a racino had the higher long-term payback (e.g., New York's racinos at 92 percent versus Atlantic City's casinos at 89-92 percent). ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Can the casino control who hits jackpots?

27 February 2013
When a casino chain orders the same slot machines from a particular manufacturer, would the payback percentage be set in the order and that particular payback percentage machine(s) be distributed among the properties throughout the U.S.? I ask this because it seems the win percentage on a particular game I ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Will all slot machines be video in the future?

20 February 2013
John: Thanks for all you write regarding casinos and slots -- you have been a superb mythbuster in this area. Here is my question designed to bring relief to many slot players -- I think: (A) Does the RNG function to first determine a certain payout for a spin on a machine, which is then reflected ... Ask the Slot Expert: Do casinos mark money with a pen?

13 February 2013
You responded to "Do Casinos Mark Their Money" with a resounding "no." However, I was in AC last week and the craps table dealers were putting a stroke on the incoming bills (probably $100) with a pen leaving an invisible mark. This was the first time I saw this so maybe there have been some changes. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Do casinos mark their money with a scent?

6 February 2013
I believe I have a big, serious question that maybe you can help me figure out.... My question about the casino is when you win and you cash out your ticket and change it for cash, does the casino money have a certain mark or scent that when you use it again to play their machine it stays at the ... Ask the Slot Expert: Should I play Class II video poker with a strategy?

30 January 2013
John, I realize that the VLT video poker machines are not really video poker machines as we know them, but even though we don’t have any control over the decision, why wouldn’t we want to play them as though they were Class III just so we keep up on the proper strategy when we DO play the real thing. ...
