Paying the commission

23 November 2017
QUESTION: Please explain why casinos charge a commission on winning banker bets in baccarat and mini-baccarat, but don't charge a commission when you bet on player? That doesn't seem fair. Is it to drive people away from banker and get them to bet more on player? ANSWER: No, the casinos aren't trying to push you toward betting on player. ... (read more)

What's the right answer?

19 November 2017
Some casino questions have no answers — at least, none that the askers want to hear. Take the novice roulette player who asked recently, "Which is better, red or black?" I explained that neither is better, that both give you the same chance to win. There are 18 red numbers and 18 black numbers. On a ... (read more)

243 ways to win at slots

16 November 2017
QUESTION: I've played some of those 243 ways to win slots, and I'm never exactly sure how I've won. Sometimes I've won and I don't really see how the symbols connect. Are these the same as scatter pays? Do the paylines look different than on regular slots? ANSWER: On 243 ways to win slots, which were ... (read more)

Low-denomination video poker

12 November 2017
Video poker players who opt for a little low-cost fun at nickel machines usually encounter pay tables that are a couple of notches below those on games that require bigger bets. There are exceptions, mostly at casinos that cater to Las Vegas locals. A quick peek at VPFree2.com tells me you can still find ... (read more)

I surrender!

9 November 2017
QUESTION: I was in a blackjack game that allowed late surrender. Other rules weren't very good: eight decks, dealer hits soft 17, double downs restricted to hard 10 and 11, split pairs only once, no double after split. At least I had the surrender option, and I took full advantage. I seemed to get a lot of 16s against dealer 10s. ... (read more)

Is this Mary's jackpot?

5 November 2017
Mary has played slot machines for more years than she cares to count. "I was playing when all the slots were three reels, you pulled handles and were paid in coins that dropped out of the machine. I was playing when you had to wash your hands practically every hour or so. When you handled the coins to put ... (read more)

3x, 4x, 5x odds at craps

2 November 2017
QUESTION: I went back and read about 3x, 4x and 5x odds in craps, and how they make the payoffs easy. Is easy really the point, though? What if I wanted to make a 3x odds bets on a point of 5 or 9? Would they refuse your money? ANSWER: The dealers wouldn't refuse your money, but they might urge a different bet, to the point of helping you size it correctly. ... (read more)

Asian Poker

29 October 2017
Take a walk through the Asian games room at a large casino sometime, and you'll see a different mix than on the main casino floor. Baccarat is a must, and operators mix and match from a list that includes pai gow tiles, pai gow poker and sic bo — along with a little blackjack or craps. A newer game that ... (read more)

Becoming a pro slot player

26 October 2017
QUESTION: I was wondering if you could give me some advice at becoming a professional slots player. I'm 26, working for a marketing company, and in a really good spot because of two big slots jackpots. They were both on penny progressive games, one for $25,000 and a little extra and the other for a little under $15,000. ... (read more)

Three Card Draw Poker

22 October 2017
My e-mail recently brought word from the Tropicana in Atlantic City that it was adding Three Card Draw Poker to its roster of table games. It's a game of some interest. I liked when I sat in for a few hands in a no-cash demonstration a year ago. It's easy to play, and its listed house edge of 1.03% of total ... (read more)
