Big craps rolls and big house edges

19 October 2017
QUESTION: I was just at a craps table where the shooter just never rolled sevens. He made his points, and he didn't even roll sevens on the comeouts. There had to be 20 rolls in a row without a 7. It was uncanny. What are the odds of a streak like that? ANSWER: On any given roll, the odds are 5 in 6 that ... (read more)

Optimal blackjack play

15 October 2017
In my close to 30 years of playing blackjack, it's seemed to me that other players are getting better, with a greater percentage playing basic strategy, That isn't to say the guesswork players have disappeared. Numbers may be reduced, but some remain, and some of their plays are . . . um . . . not optimal. ... (read more)

Those hidden house edges

12 October 2017
QUESTION: Can you tell me if Bally's Roulette game (upright slot) is a true game of chance with the bouncing ball, or if the machine is being controlled or set based on betting patterns? ANSWER: It is a true game of chance with results determined by a random number generator. The RNG receives no information on your betting patterns. ... (read more)

Some questions about slots

8 October 2017
My e-mail brings more questions about slot machines than anything else. Most of are of the "how can I find a hot machine?" or "how can I tell when a machine is ready to pay off?" variety. For those, I have no answer — you can't tell from looking at a machine whether it's a high payer, and with random results, machines are never "ready" or "due" to pay off. ... (read more)

Deuces Wild and a weird blackjack hand

5 October 2017
QUESTION: I was interested in your column on adjustments in moving away from full-pay Deuces Wild strategy. It did leave me wondering about the term “full-pay.” There are so many versions of every game. Who decides what full-pay is? Does a full-pay game have to pay 100%? ANSWER: The term “full-pay” to ... When do you want your wins?

1 October 2017
There’s no bad time to win at casino games. When the wins come, any of us would accept them gratefully. But if you could time your wins on a three-day trip, which would you choose: early wins, so you had extra cash for your getaway, or late wins, so you could be sure the money would be coming home? I asked for input from a group of slot and video poker players. ... (read more)

A Walk on the Wild Side

28 September 2017
QUESTION: I was playing a video slot with stacked wilds, and I got a stack filling the last reel. I said to myself more than anyone else, “I hate when that’s on the last reel.” I guess I was loud enough for others to hear, because the lady next to me said, “Really? I like it there. I always think that’s my ... (read more)

The math of the pass line

24 September 2017
Connie was a student at a daylong seminar I gave for a park district group around 10 or 12 years ago. I taught the basics of how to play casino games, and Connie discovered she loved craps. “I could never figure it out before that day,” she told me later. “It confused me. How could 7 be a winner sometimes ... (read more)

The Martingale and full-pay Deuces

21 September 2017
QUESTION: I have a question about the double-up Martingale, where you keep doubling bets until you win. I’ve looked online and I know you recommend against it, as do lot of gambling experts. But suppose I decide to try, starting with betting $5 on black in roulette. I lose six in a row, so I lose $5, $10, $20, $40, $80 and $160. ... (read more)

Their first time

17 September 2017
A while back, I relayed a story from a slot player who had a pretty bad time on her first casino visit. She’s a regular player today only because a friend convinced her to give it another try, and she had more fun the second go-round. That drew responses from many readers who wanted to share their own first-time experiences. ... (read more)
