QUESTION: Do you believe in luck? When you win, have you been skillful or lucky? ANSWER: All games of chance have elements of luck. If you draw a royal flush at video poker, you’ve been lucky. If you have your chips on the pass line and the craps shooter makes six passes in a row, you’ve been lucky. ... (read more)
Paul's neighbor's roulette system7 July 2019
When I hear from Paul, I expect a video poker question. I’ve mentioned him before, a student at a seminar in the 1990s who has contacted me from time to time ever since. Imagine my surprise when I opened an e-mail from Paul, and it was about roulette. “You know me,” he said. “I don’t play roulette. ... (read more)
Why are slot percentages better than table games?4 July 2019
QUESTION: I was looking at the New Jersey revenue report for May, and I noticed something that struck me as really odd. At Borgata, it listed the casino win percentage as 15.1% on tables and 8.5% on slots. That means it paid players 84.9% on tables and 91.5% on slots right? The slots had higher payback percentages. ... (read more)
Video poker games that are not draw poker30 June 2019
All major video poker games are based on five-card draw poker, to the point it’s a novelty or rarity to find one that’s not. That sometimes puzzles players such as Marc, a Pennsylvania reader who wrote to ask why stud poker wasn’t better represented. “Texas Hold’em is the most popular game in poker rooms,” he wrote. ... Smell slot machines27 June 2019
QUESTION: Three-dimensional imaging on slot machines has gotten really good, and you wrote that Sphinx 4-D adds touch to the mix. Then you have the games with the motion chairs, so at least some of the games are going for a full-sensory experience. My question is, with all that, why don’t we have games with ... (read more)
About slot percentages23 June 2019
Readers have long memories, and when they falter, the internet is there to refresh them. At the very least, it seemed that way in early June when a reader e-mailed to remind me that way back in 2010, I’d written about mining the monthly revenue reports of state gaming boards and commissions to compare slot machine payback percentages at different casinos. ... Mississippi Stud and sports betting20 June 2019
QUESTION: I have a question about the Mississippi Stud strategy at wizardofodds.com. After you’ve seen four cards and are making your last bet before you see the fifth, the weakest hand it says to raise on is three mid-cards provided you’ve made at least one 3x bet. Mid-cards are 6s through 10s, and if you pair one of them up, you get a push. ... (read more)

The truth about video reels13 June 2019
QUESTION: My wife pointed out something you wrote about the slots, that a reel could have nine 7s and one lemon, but that the programming could make the lemon come up 90% of the time. It was about three-reel slots, but we were wondering, do video slots work the same way? Can they make it so that other ... (read more)
Bankroll requirements for video poker9 June 2019
Imagine you’re off for a couple of days at a casino destination – Atlantic City, Las Vegas, one of the hundreds of tribal casinos or anywhere else. During your stay, you plan to play a fair amount of video poker, perhaps 10 hours or more over two days. How much money to you need to have a reasonable chance ... (read more)
