Raising and hitting

15 August 2019
QUESTION: What’s the best time to raise my bet on a penny slot? I always start out playing one coin per line, so 40 cents on a 40-line slot. What if I have a couple of nice bonuses or even a progressive, and I’m ahead $50 or $60. Would that be a good time to raise to two coins per line? My sister-in-law has had some pretty big wins, but she bets bigger, sometimes 10 coins per line. ... (read more)

Playing carnival games

11 August 2019
Earlier this summer, I was talking with blackjack-playing Bob, someone I’ve mentioned several times. He pointed out a full Mississippi Stud table and two full Three Card Poker tables. “It always makes me wonder if people play those as their main games,” he said. “Seems to me they’re fine as change of pace ... Triple zero equals a zero

8 August 2019
QUESTION: I saw one of those new triple-zero roulette tables, and I was glad to have read about the house edge increase. I’m wondering how far casinos could take this. Could they have four zeroes? Five? More? How far could they go in adding zeroes and increasing their edge? ANSWER: The main limiting factor would be player acceptance. ... (read more)

Play it right!

4 August 2019
On a Saturday evening in July, I joined longtime friend Matt for pizza and baseball, watching the Cubs and Brewers over some fine dining. Matt doesn’t gamble, so I really didn’t expect to be debating blackjack strategy. But Rob, a friend of Matt’s I’d never met before, had been to a casino that morning and lost a few dollars. ... Eschewing the big payouts

1 August 2019
QUESTION: I saw something happen at Three Card Poker and I wondered if you agreed with the player. He was betting only on ante-play, and the rest of us were betting both ante-play and Pair Plus. Naturally, he was the one who got a straight flush. Any of the rest of us would have had a big win at 40-1. ... (read more)

Sports betting at one year old

28 July 2019
More than a year has passed since the U.S. Supreme Court opened the door to legal sports betting, and while states haven’t rushed headlong through the opening, betting options are expanding rapidly. Sportsbooks are up and running in 10 states. Six more states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws ... (read more)

Good buy bets at craps

25 July 2019
QUESTION: I was playing craps my usual way. I bet pass and take full odds up to 5x. Then I place 6 and 8 – whichever one isn’t the point, or both if neither is the point. I noticed this guy a couple of spots away from me who kept buying 4 and 10. When I first learned craps, I learned buying reduced the edge a little from placing those numbers, but that still left bad bets. ... (read more)

Slot paybacks

21 July 2019
For decades, it’s been common knowledge among slot players that higher-denomination games bring higher payback percentages. Slotmakers and casinos rely on players knowing that because when players bet more, it means more profit for the house. Casinos may not keep as much on a percentage basis on the higher-denomination games, but the dollars and cents are bigger. ... (read more)

Two hands in Double Double Bonus Poker

18 July 2019
QUESTION: What would you hold with these two hands if you were playing Double Double Bonus Poker? : 1. Ad, Ah, 7d, 7c, 7h ? 2. Ad, As, 4h, 4d, 4c ? ANSWER: The best play in either case is to hold the full house as long as it pays at least 8-for-1. Assuming a five-coin bet, neither the 250-coin payoff on ... (read more)

Small blackjack strategy effects

14 July 2019
Not all basic strategy plays are created equal. Some blackjack hands are such close calls it takes only a slight difference in composition or in the proportion of remaining cards to flip the best play. A few months ago I mentioned hard 16 vs. a dealer’s 10 as one of those plays. Basic strategy charts tell ... (read more)
