On a hot summer's morning, one of the coolest places I could be was at WMS Gaming's studios on the North Side of Chicago. There, Bill Pfund, WMS vice president of investor relations, and Jami Thornton, senior product marketing professional, were walking me through the latest and greatest video slot machine, ... Q. My husband and I just starting going to the casino, once a month or so. My question is, why aren't there more roulette tables in casinos? We think it's fun, and it seems like it gives you as good a chance to win as anything, especially when you bet on red or black. One's going to win and one's going to lose, so that's pretty even, right?
A. ... (read more)
Bally's roulette slot10 July 2012
Not all slot machines are designed for mass appeal. Niche games targeted at a specific audience have their place, too.
In the last several years, one game that has earned its niche is Roulette from Bally. This isn't one of the big multi-station systems such as Shuffle Master's Rapid Roulette. It's a ... (read more)

Q. I read in the news about that roulette wheel that hit number 19 seven times in a row. What are the odds, and how much would you have won if you'd bet it and just let your winnings ride for all seven?
A. For those who haven't seen the story, it started when a poker player took a picture of a lighted display that showed the last 16 numbers at a roulette table at the Rio in Las Vegas. ... (read more)
Jackson slot a thriller3 July 2012
The buzz has been building about Bally Technologies' Michael Jackson: King of Pop slot machines ever since it gave the casino industry a preview at Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas last November.
Now the game is ready for distribution, as ballyhooed in a concert-tour mimicking poster touting "Worldwide ... (read more)

Q. I won a mini-slot tournament for $750. Lucky me! It was a low entry fee with just one round of play, and the prize was based on the number of entrants. But then they said I had to sign a tax form before they could pay me.
I'd won slot jackpots before, and I thought they didn't have the tax form unless they were over $1,200. ... (read more)
Splitting 8s in blackjack26 June 2012
It was just past 9 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, one of my favorite times to play. Crowds were small, tables were wide open, and I settled in for a little $10-a-hand blackjack.
It was a six-deck game, with the dealer standing on all 17s and doubling down after splitting pairs permitted. I was dealt a pair of 8s against a dealer's 10. ... (read more)

Q. I have a question about slots strategy. I went to the casino last night and got back a chunk of my recent losses. A little background: I'm very old-fashioned and only play the max (75 cents) on mechanical machines. There's too much going on with most video machines and I have no idea how I won or how I lost. ... Players who bet more have a better chance of winning a mystery jackpot19 June 2012
Readers send systems to me fairly often. Blackjack systems, craps systems, roulette systems -- you name it. Players like looking for that magic combination that somehow will defy the math and make them winner.
Not many are slot systems. That's natural enough, since slot players don't have the same opportunities to devise betting combinations as some table games offer. ... (read more)

Q. I have just recently started playing video poker. I have one question that I can't find the answer to. When I am playing regular slots and I hit a generous payout I usually move to another machine. I know that slots are really just luck of the draw and use RNGs, but I have yet to see two large payouts ... (read more)
