EZ Baccarat makes baccarat even easier

12 June 2012
Baccarat always has been among the easiest casino games. It's a guessing game. Does the banker hand or the player hand come closer to a total of 9? You can bet either side, and you have no decisions to make after you place your wager. After the banker and player hand each receive two cards, the totals determine whether a third card is dealt on either hand. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

7 June 2012
Q. When I play video poker, why do I only get half the slot club points as when I play the slots? I'm betting just as much money -- more, since I bet five quarters at a time on a video poker game, but only three at a time on a (three-reel) slot machine. But I get a point for every $4 I bet on a slot machine, but it takes $8 to get a point on video poker. ... (read more)

Gaming and social media

5 June 2012
In today's social media environment, casinos and casino-related companies are trying as hard to connect with their customers as any other business. Take the major slot machine manufacturers. WMS Gaming brings news and video presentations of its latest games to its Facebook page, as well as offering free ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

31 May 2012
Q. The other day I was playing Double Joker's Wild on a video poker machine and was dealt a natural royal flush. Would you by any chance know the odds of being dealt a natural royal flush from a 54-card deck? A. With a 54-card deck, there are 3,162,510 possible five-card denominations, and four possible natural royal flushes, no wild card. ... (read more)

You can't escape the house edge

29 May 2012
When casinos offer bets on opposite outcomes of a play, they always leave a clear path to a house profit. In craps, pass and don't pass don't quite offset, because a loser 12 on the pass line is just a push rather than a winner in don't pass. In baccarat, player wins less often than its opposite, banker, and the house preserves an edge by collecting a commission on winning banker bets. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

24 May 2012
Q. Why aren't there more sportsbooks? When I started playing in casinos, Nevada and New Jersey were the only places to go. I always went to Las Vegas, and got used to the sportsbooks being there. Now there are casinos everywhere, and I mostly stay home in Louisiana, but there are no books. Do you know why books didn't expand along with the casinos? A. ... (read more)

A four-card royal is one of the best starting hands

22 May 2012
Jim is a Colorado reader who e-mails me several times a year, usually with video poker conundrums. His latest came after a session at 9/6 Double Double Bonus Poker, the full-pay version where full houses pay 9-for-1, flushes 6-for-1 and where the return with expert play is 98.98%. "Three times, I was dealt four parts of a royal flush," he wrote. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

17 May 2012
Q. My dad is a lifelong craps player. He likes to wait till the shooter rolls a 6 or 8 on the comeout, THEN bet on pass plus odds. He says that's better than placing 6 or 8. Is it? A. That depends on how much your dad is betting. A pass bet made after the point is established is called a put bet. ... (read more)

Winning can make slot game a favorite

15 May 2012
Every slot player has a favorite game, one to seek out on each casino trip. Sometimes it's because the theme is particularly engaging, or because a bonus event is especially fun. But often, players like a game because they've won on it. Let's listen to a few players as they tell what hooked them on their favorite games. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

10 May 2012
Q. My dad retired to Vegas and every time I visit him (two or three times a year) we play hours and hours of video poker. We almost always play Double Double Bonus. We play single play, Triple Play or Five Play. I would without a doubt call my dad an expert player. The one area we disagree on is when we are dealt three to the royal along with a pair of aces. ...
