QUESTION: I think I remember you writing that the odds were so high against getting a royal flush in Caribbean Stud Poker that you were unlikely to even see someone else at your table get one in your lifetime, let alone get one yourself. Yet, playing Ten Play video poker, I was DEALT a royal on the first five cards. ... (read more)

QUESTION. What’s the worst bet on the tables? I’m thinking roulette, but my brother says some of the newer games are probably worse. What do you think? ANSWER. Roulette has one of the higher house edges among table games, but it’s not the worst. The house edge on almost every bet on an American double-zero wheel is 5.26%. ... (read more)

QUESTION: If I want to toke the dealer in Let It Ride, does it matter which spot I tip on, first, second or third? ANSWER: Assuming you have options, the place to toke is on the final bet. That’s the one that has to stay in action, whereas you can choose to pull either or both of the first two bets back. ... (read more)

Question: You say that with a strategy that’s not difficult to learn, I should get a 99% return on 9/6 Jacks or Better quarter machines, at $1.25 per hand. You are saying that for the $110,000.00 I bet last year, I should have got a return of $109,450, a loss of only $550. Last year I lost almost $5,000, a return of 55%. ... (read more)
Expert play pays off in Triple Play video poker13 August 2012
One of my true loves among electronic casino games is Triple Play Poker. I like that I can break even or better with one decent pay even if two hands are losers. I like that I’m paid three times over when I’m dealt a big winner. I’ve never been dealt a royal flush, but I have been dealt four wild deuces and gotten that 1,000-coin return three times over. ... Q. I regularly go to three casinos. Two of them have started to do some interesting things with comps. One has designated certain slot machines so you get two, three or four times points every day. They're not big themed games or anything, just regular video slots. Is it worth playing for the extra points, ... (read more)
Decisions don't matter on Class II video poker7 August 2012
Interactivity has become a prime goal for manufacturers of electronic games as they search for ways to keep players involved, and keep them in their seats. But the original interactive electronic casino game is video poker.
Video poker players love the feeling they're in control. They make decisions on every hand, and their strategies affect the outcome. ... (read more)

Q. Can you settle something once and for all? My brother and I have argued for years over which casino game is best for players. I say it's blackjack, he says it's craps. We're not talking about counting cards or being good enough to make money all the time. We're talking about guys who know basic strategy in blackjack, who know the best bets at craps, and are willing to stick to them.

Video poker bankroll guidelines24 July 2012
My friend Mark isn't a casino regular, but he likes to play a little video poker now and then. His goal is just to have a good time and stay in action for a couple of hours.
"Do you have a guide to how much cash I need to last a couple of hours?" he asked.
I showed him the bankroll calculator on Video ... (read more)

Q. I've read several times that dollar slots pay more than quarters, and quarters more
than nickels, and so on. My question is, why? And, if that's the case, shouldn't we all be playing dollar machines?
A. In days of yore -- and by yore, I mean before about 1997 -- when nearly all slots had three ... (read more)
