Top Slot Reviews #4

20 December 2002

We begin this article with the 'soulful' sounds of Mr. Ray Charles and his signature slot What'd I Pay?

and end with two very popular slots from Williams--Hollywood Squares and Monopoly Party Train. All Aboard!

1) What'd I Pay. Bally: Another soulful entry featuring the legendary Ray Charles and equipped to accommodate the blind with Braille and voice assistance for the hearing impaired. Two bonus events include the back-up singers, 'Paylettes'. Three of these symbols scattered will get you the 'Paylette Bonus' comprised of a bonus amount and multiplier.

The main screen "What'd I Pay Bonus" is triggered when three or more title symbols appear. The player then chooses from several 'Bonus Musician' symbols for coin amounts or the letters R, A and Y for an extra reward. This is a 'hot' slot befitting one of the world's 'cool' guys.

2) Barn Yard. Aristocrat: The 'Jump To Win' feature in a non-win combo turns into a reward by the "nudge" of a winning symbol landing above or below the payline. The 'nudge' could also trigger the bonus round or reward the player with 1000 coins. The top box reel multiplier presents 2X to 25X pay and four barnyard animals peering over fences. When activated by 3 'Barn Yard' symbols, the four animals flash in rapid sequence displaying different coin amounts until the player stops the action, then the multiplier reel turns for mooo credits. Squeals of delight will echo across the fields for the top award of 4000 coins.

3) Sweet Liberty. Aristocrat: This patriotic slot abounds with American themes such as the Statue of Liberty, firecrackers and a rocket's red glare while 3 or more rocket symbols serve as the scatter-pay.

Line up three or more firecrackers for the bonus round where 20 free games and triple jackpots are up for grabs. While the dollar version 'Lady Liberty' will put a dent in your gambling bankroll, the average hit frequency is higher with approx. every three spins. Also, consider the 20 line version 'Sweet Liberty Deluxe.'

Our Aussie friends have produced a grand American salute with these versions.

4) Hollywood Squares. WMS: Current stars of this game show such as Don Rickles, Joan Rivers and Whoopi Goldberg are all done in caricatures with hilarious lines and real voice-overs. Indeed, just standing near the machine is entertaining because their snappy patter continues  when the game is in the 'attract' mode.

'Wild Star Bonus' occurs when star symbols land on the first and fifth reels. The outer reels lock in position and the middle reels re-spin five times with the celebrities acting as wild symbols. 'Hollywood Squares' bonus is triggered when three or more of the show's logos appear on a payline. The player then plays a game of tic-tac-toe touching a square for his 'X' while the computer chooses the 'O'. If you win the tic-tac-toe game the "Question Bonus" round begins and you choose one of  the stars for a question. After some wisecracking, the celebrity will answer correctly and your winnings will be doubled up to 5,250 coins.

Win or not this game is packed with fun while you 'chat up' the stars.

5) Monopoly Party Train. WMS: This version concentrates on the four railroads for its main theme. Train icons, Mr. Monopoly and Free Parking are wild symbols and the main screen bonus is triggered when boxcars are lined up on the first, third and fifth reels. The player selects one of the boxcars revealing a multiplier and if the selection reveals Mr. Monopoly dressed as a hobo the multiplier rises to a higher level.

Three or more 'Train Ticket' symbols and you decide which track the 'Party Train' will travel. Four picks follow to get around the board while receiving bonuses on each landing space that include 'Community Chest' and/or 'Chance'. All Monopoly fans will enjoy this updated version, so 'Hop on Board'.

All five of these versions made the Top 300 List and should be on your 'search and find list'.
