Top 10 US lottery wins of all time

3 March 2025

“What would you do if you won the lottery?”

It's a question we've all entertained, dreaming of lavish vacations, early retirements, and paying off family debts. For a select few, that fantasy became a jaw-dropping reality. Some remained anonymous, some made headlines, and others faced legal battles—but all walked away with unimaginable fortunes.

Today, with the help of an impressive list compiled by LotteryGeeks.com, we explore to the 10 largest lottery wins in U.S. history and the stories behind them.

10. $1.13 billion
After a March 2024 drawing, a New Jersey player decided to take the one-time payment of $537 million before taxes.

Choosing to remain anonymous, the winner didn’t come forward until December 2024 to begin collecting the prize.

The winning ticket was sold at a Monmouth County ShopRite and the store received $30,000 for selling the ticket.

9. $1.22 billion
Knowing you just won a $1.22 billion lottery drawing just days before New Year’s Eve might change your plans.

That is what happened for a lucky player from California just a couple of months ago in December. The cash payout for this winner was just shy of $550 million prior to taxes.

The winning numbers were 3, 7, 37, 49, 55 and gold Mega Ball 6. The ticket was sold at a Circle K on Rhonda Road in Cottonwood.

8. $1.33 billion
On 6 April, 2024, after a three-hour delay for security reasons, a lucky person from Oregon was announced as the winner of the $1.33 billion Powerball jackpot with the winning numbers 22, 27, 44, 52, 69 and 9.

With over three months of consecutive drawings yielding no winners, the eventual cash payout climbed to $621 million before taxes. In addition to the big winner, there were also seven tickets that received $1 million from this drawing.

7. $1.34 billion
One winning ticket turned into a massive payday for two people who had a previous agreement.

In July 2022 in Illinois, the winning ticket was out there for weeks after the drawing, but nobody claimed it. Winners have 60 days to come forward and decide between the annuity payments or the lump sum option, and also have a year to claim the prize in general.

However, after weeks of discussing with financial advisors, the two winners, who remain anonymous, came forward and took the $780 million before taxes in a one-time payment.

6. $1.35 billion
Just over two years ago, in January 2023, things began to stir in Maine after a major lottery win.

A man bought a Mega Millions ticket at a gas station in Lebanon. Choosing to stay anonymous, he took the one-time cash payment of $723 million before taxes. However, the action didn’t end there.

Believing she violated a non-disclosure agreement by revealing his lottery win, the man filed a $100,000 lawsuit against his child's mother.

5. $1.54 billion
In October 2018, a South Carolina resident announced he had the winning ticket to a more than $1.5 billion Mega Millions Lottery.

While remaining anonymous, the winner was able to claim the largest lottery payout to a single winner in U.S. history, at the time.

The lucky player chose the one-time lump sum cash payment of $878 million. The ticket was purchased at a KC Mart convenience store in Simpsonville. The owner of the store received $50,000 for selling the winning ticket.

4. $1.59 billion
While splitting a prize is usually bittersweet, a near $1.6 billion jackpot likely eased the pain. In January 2016, Tennessee, California, and Florida all held winning tickets for the record-breaking Powerball drawing, the first U.S. lottery to surpass $1 billion.

John and Lisa Robinson from Tennessee were the first to claim their winning ticket just days after the drawing, and then appeared on the “Today” show.

The other two winning tickets were Marvin and Mae Acosta from California and Maureen Smith and David Kaltschmidt from Florida. The winning numbers were 4-8-19-27-34 and Powerball 10.

The lump sum for the three tickets were just over $528 million.

3. $1.6 billion
The Florida Lottery saw the biggest Mega Millions win in history take place over the summer in 2023.

Drawn in August, the winning ticket was presented on 25 September and was sold at a Publix supermarket in Neptune Beach. The winner decided to receive the massive prize as a lump sum of $794 million.

While the identities were set to be unveiled, the group found a way to keep names under wraps through an LLC filing in Delaware, where it wouldn’t need to become public record.

2. $1.76 billion
After 35 consecutive drawings without a winner, the long-awaited jackpot was finally claimed in October 2023. On the 36th draw, a group, represented by Theodorus Struyck, presented the winning ticket. They could choose between a $774.1 million lump sum or 29 annual payments of $1.76 million.

The store, Midway Market in Frazier Park, California, received $1 million for selling the winning ticket.

1. $2.04 billion
In November 2022, the biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history changed Edwin Castro’s life. The winning ticket was bought in Altadena, California, with all six numbers, including the Powerball (10), matching.

According to the California Lottery, Castro cashed his ticket in on Valentine’s Day in 2023, opting for the lump sum, and after taxes, he walked away with just over $628 million.

Since his win, Castro added three California homes to his portfolio.
