Top 10 sports betting events for 202228 February 2022
Here, we take a look at 10 events to mark on your calendar. 10. Wimbledon The first serve of Wimbledon 2022 will be in the air on 27 June with the final scheduled for 10 July. It could have a very different look this year with defending champion Novak Djokovic weighing his options for playing in this year’s tournament due to his vaccination status. This comes after his brutal experience in Australia where he was detained and had to await a court’s decision on whether he could stay in the country for the tournament or not since he is unvaccinated. After skipping the Australian Open, Djokovic ended up losing in the quarterfinals in Dubai which cost him his No. 1 world ranking. Could this losing top ranking play a factor in his decision for Wimbledon? Currently on Everygame Sportsbook, Djokovic is still the heavy favorite to win the famous tournament at +110. 9. Presidents Cup Moving over to the world of golf, scheduled for 19-25 September, this year’s Presidents Cup will be held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Ryder Cup was originally scheduled for the end of September, but because of events being pushed back in 2021 due to COVID-19, the Ryder Cup has been moved to Fall 2023. The Presidents Cup features two teams going head to head, the U.S. Team vs. the International Team minus Europe. The European Team squares off against the U.S. Team in the Ryder Cup. The U.S. will be captained by Davis Love III and the International squad will be lead by Trevor Immelman of South Africa. The U.S. has dominated this tournament since its origin in 1994, going 11-1-1 in the 13 tournaments and has won the last eight meetings. On bet365 Sportsbook & Racebook, the U.S. are heavy favorites at -350. 8. Stanley Cup Finals The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking to cement their dynasty with a third consecutive Stanley Cup title in June. The last possible day for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals is 30 June. Currently the second favorite on Everygame, the Lightning are +650 to win it all behind the league’s best record holder, the Colorado Avalanche at +400. The Avalanche have posted a remarkable 39-10-4 record through 58 games this season and are not showing signs of slowing down by winning seven of their last 10 games. In 2021, the Lightning took care of the Montreal Canadiens in the finals with ease by a margin of four games to one. The playoffs for the National Hockey League are slated to begin on 2 May when teams will begin their journey to dethrone the back-to-back champs. 7. FIFA World Cup Starting on 21 November, 32 countries will battle it out in Qatar in hopes of lifting soccer’s most coveted international trophy. Several teams have already earned qualifying spots with many still needed to be filled. In just a couple of weeks, the U.S. will be able to decide its World Cup fate in the final three qualifying games against Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama. The two favorites on Everygame have already qualified and they are Brazil and France both sitting at +600. France raised the cup back in 2018 after a thrilling 4-2 victory against Czech Republic. My team to keep an eye on is Belgium, which is currently +1200. Star Kevin De Bruyne is one of the most entertaining players to watch and is a threat anytime he has the ball at his feet. 6. World Series Major League Baseball is in a world of hurt especially in the eyes of the fans because of the current lockout with no end in sight. Opening Day is supposed to 31 March, but that is seeming to be less likely as each day of talks between players and owners passes. Rather than dwell on the negative with the 2022 MLB season, I am going to look ahead to the eventual champion of a season that I sure hope happens. It is safe to say the Atlanta Braves shocked many last season when they went on an incredible postseason run to hoist the World Series trophy. Will they be able to do again? That is tough to tell because of the lack of free agency that took place before the lockout began. The Braves’ heart and soul, Freddie Freeman, could have played his last game in a Braves uniform, but we do not know for sure. That same could be said for many other teams as they do not have an idea of what the full rosters will look like until we can see through the fog that is this lockout. The Braves are +1400 on bet365 Sportsbook & Racebook to win back-to-back titles, but the lowest odds are with the Los Angeles Dodgers at +600. When it is all figured out and we do get to the postseason, it is a great atmosphere to place wagers on. One swing of the bat or one diving catch in the outfield can completely change a game. 5. Champions League Final Kicking it back over to soccer, the Champions League is arguably the most sought after tournament among clubs. Last year, my Chelsea Blue were crowned the top club by winning in the finals against Manchester City, 1-0, on the back of Kai Havertz, who netted the only goal of the match. We are into the round of 16 already for this year’s tournament and Chelsea is still alive looking to defend anyone from dethroning them. One of the most watched soccer events every year will be held on 28 May this year and located at Stade de France. It was originally planned to take place in Russia but was recently moved. Considering the year the team is having in the English Premier League, it is no surprise to any soccer fan that Manchester City is the favorite to win on Everygame at +225 followed by fellow Premier League club Liverpool at +350.
4. NBA Finals Before the NBA season started, I took a look at 10 bets to consider going into the season. Some of them are in decent shape, but my Best Bet of the Los Angeles Lakers winning it all is in more than just trouble. As a bettor, not thrilled on that one, but as a Celtics fan, watching the Lakers struggle like they are isn’t so bad. Game 1 of the NBA Finals tips off 2 June and I will be surprised if the Phoenix Suns or Golden State Warriors do not come out of the Western Conference. They are the co-favorites at +450 to win the title. It is tough to see another Western Conference team that can beat the Suns of Warriors in a seven-game series. The Eastern Conference is a different story. The top six teams are separated by just five games and have all made a case that they can make a deep playoff run. That doesn’t even include the Brooklyn Nets, who sit in eighth place with Kevin Durant hoping to make a return soon which, as any NBA fan knows, makes them immediate contenders. Last year, Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks took home the NBA Finals title against the Phoenix Suns, which was the team’s second finals victory in its history (1971). The Bucks have plenty of talent to have a case to be champions again but those top two Western Conference teams seem to be playing at a higher level than anyone else in the NBA currently. 3. The Masters Many say the drive to Augusta National golf course in Georgia brings chills and I don’t doubt it. The most anticipated golf tournament and major championship every year has not only myself, but every golf fan glued to their TV. Whether it’s to follow a golfer they dropped a wager on, or to see someone from their home country put on the sought-after green jacket, it is an amazing four days of golf. Last year was even more special and brought more history. Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese golfer to win a major on the PGA Tour when he was given the honor of having the previous winner, Dustin Johnson, place the green jacket on him. Matsuyama is not too high on the list to defend his title. The highly-talented golfer from Japan sits at +2500 on Everygame with 11 golfers ahead of him, including Jon Rahm from Spain as the favorite at +800. Personally, I’d love to see Collin Morikawa (+1200) take home a green jacket. Last year’s Open Championship winner, Morikawa has such impressive control with his irons and puts himself in many good birdie opportunities. He may or may not have mistakenly walked in front of a tee box that Justin Thomas was teeing off from last week but it seemed both golfers saw the humor in the accidental error. 2. Kentucky Derby Saturday, 7 May we will yet again be able to witness “the most exciting two minutes in sports” when the Kentucky Derby hits Churchill Downs for a 1.25 mile race to start the Triple Crown races. I will be hopefully sitting in a Las Vegas sportsbook watching a nice exacta box or some sort of bet cash. Last year’s Kentucky Derby race was in headlines recently and that is because the winner, Medina Spirit, was stripped of the 2021 Derby win after failing a drug test following the race last year. This test failure also led to the suspension of well-known and well-achieved trainer Bob Baffert.
In the last three years, we have seen a disqualification in 2019 when a horse didn’t stay straight and disrupted the run for another horse, leading to Country House winning. And now last year we had another disqualification in Medina Spirit for a failed drug test. What could this year’s race hold for us? 1. March Madness In November, right as the 2021/2022 NCAA basketball season was beginning, I took a look at 10 teams that I thought had a shot to win March Madness. Many on that list I still believe can make it happen. Two that stand out to me right now are Kansas and Purdue who seem to have the most depth and well-rounded teams. Kansas sits at +1400 and Purdue at +900 on Everygame with the favorite Gonzaga at +325. We are just 13 days from Selection Sunday when the brackets will be determined and people can begin their chaotic process of deciding from the 68 teams, who is going to win it all. The opening two days of the tournament are by far the craziest with 16 games each day and many lose their bracket hopes on day one, including myself in recent years. Besides the bracket, there are tons of chances to place sports bets from the amount of games and props that go into this tournament. As I mentioned, I do like Kansas and Purdue a lot, but one dark horse team that has a lot of value that I think can make a very deep run is LSU. LSU (+8000) is a very physical team and dealt with some key players getting injured in the middle of the season which led to some struggles but they are getting healthy again and their normal starting lineup have a strong record together. The team will be tested with a road game at Arkansas and a home game against Alabama before diving into the SEC tournament, which is filled with six teams currently in Joe Lunardi’s bracket.
