Casino City’s Friday Five: Sports betting edition

18 May 2018

Obviously, the top story for this week is the Supreme Court's decision in the New Jersey case to announce that PASPA is unconstitutional. Expect a lot of news and updates from various states on their status to legalizing sports betting. So let’s start there, shall we?

5. US Supreme Court decision paves the way for legalized sports betting in New Jersey and beyond

In addition to New Jersey, which could begin accepting sports wagers as early as Memorial Day, the other states that already have legislation in place and aren't far behind the Garden State are Connecticut, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Mississippi.

Professional and amateur sports leagues have been worried about the integrity of their respective games becoming corrupted, but now they are looking to come to an agreement to receive a percentage of the money gambled on games within the leagues. Some owners of professional teams are thrilled with the decision.

4. Top 10 questions and answers regarding the US Supreme Court sports betting decision

Yes, Monday's ruling by SCOTUS will eventually lead to numerous U.S. states introducing sports betting. However, there are still many questions to be answered and fallacies to correct before gaining a full understanding on the ruling.

That's where our own Gary Trask steps in and answers 10 common questions we have heard since Monday.

3. Resorts World Catskills celebrates Grand Opening of integrated resort destination
Before sports betting took over the casino news Monday, Resorts World Catskills had the Grand Opening of its integrated resort last weekend.

It was an eventful weekend for the New York casino, with performances by Jerry Seinfeld and Cirque du Soleil-style acrobats. Several VIP guests attended the weekend for the momentous occasion, as well.

After their big weekend opening, the casino is also prepared to move along with the legalization of sports betting.

2. Indiana man wins $1 million at M Resort slot tournament

It’s always a plus to see or hear about someone winning big money at the slots. At the fifth annual Marquee Millionaire Slot Tournament at M Resort in Las Vegas, Richard Ideker took home $1 million after ending up with the highest cumulative score.

Congrats to Mr. Ideker on his million-dollar winnings. Maybe one day that will happen to one of us, but that’s a story for a different day.

1. 888 launches US interstate poker network across three states

The ground-breaking launch earlier this month means that poker players across Nevada, Delaware and now New Jersey are able to compete with each other in cash games and tournaments for the very first time.

Players will enjoy the poker formats more because they can take part in the tournaments when and how they want. More good news: Casino City readers may be eligible for a $1,500 welcome bonus.

See you at the tables!
