Casino City’s Friday Five: 2024 WSOP Main Event winner edition

19 July 2024

Today's major story across the globe involves a global IT outage causing widespread disruptions across various sectors, including airlines, banks, shops, broadcasts and, yes, casino operators.

At least one major sports betting operator, BetMGM, is experiencing temporary issues due to this outage. The problem, linked to a software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, has left BetMGM customers unable to access the app or sign in to their betting accounts.

But for today’s Friday Five, we’re moving on to five more headline-grabbing news items. After a record-breaking turnout, Jonathan Tamayo has been crowned the 2024 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion. Before we get into the details about this record-breaking, $10 million win, we have some other top stories to look into, including a six-figure jackpot from Treasure Island in Las Vegas, a major transformation at Atlantis Paradise Casino, DraftKings opening live table games at an Atlantic City property, and FanDuel’s monopoly in Washington, D.C. officially coming to an end.

Let’s begin with a jackpot:

5. Winner hits $122,720 jackpot at Treasure Island
On Tuesday, one lucky player from Texas walked away with $122,720 after hitting the Monte Carlo Spin & Win jackpot at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

4. DraftKings opens live tables at Resorts Casino Hotel
At Draftkings Sportsbook inside Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, guests can now play live table games with bets starting at just $10.

Also added across 24 traditional table games was a $5 side bet featuring a progressive jackpot that’s just for Resorts’ players.

Gamblers can bet on the games, watch the games and now play live table games at Draftkings Sportsbook every Thursday - Sunday. Table games include fan favorites like Blackjack, Let It Ride, Roulette and Three Card Poker.

3. Atlantis Paradise Island Resort Casino unveils $150 million transformation
Atlantis at Paradise Island Resort and Casino in the Bahamas completed a $150 million resort-wide transformation, including updates to the casino, guestrooms, restaurants and lounges.

The resort unveiled refashioned guestrooms at The Royal, Atlantis' iconic towers; an entirely redefined Atlantis Casino; and Paranza, a new restaurant at The Cove, where Michelin-starred chef Michael White brings his culinary mastery to the table.

The Royal at Atlantis, a 1,201-room hotel home to the Atlantis Casino, underwent a multimillion-dollar transformation. The Royal has 120 suites, including 10 Grand Suites, four Presidential Suites, and three Royal Suites, all echoing the redesign of the guest rooms.

The 85-table, 700-game casino is home to several of the resort's finest dining options, including Nobu and Silan, the new restaurant by James Beard Award-winning chef Alon Shaya.

2. New sportsbooks shake up D.C. setting scene
Tuesday was nothing short of interesting for online sports betting in Washington, D.C. FanDuel, the only provider of mobile sports wagering at the time, had to temporarily put a pause on accepting bets as it waited for Mayor Muriel Bowser to sign FY2025’s budget. The signed budget would allow sports betting to move forward.

Once the budget was signed, Wednesday changed the sports gambling days in the district. Both Caesars Sportsbook and BetMGM joined the party two days ago when they launched in Washington, D.C., no longer having FanDuel as the only player in that area.

Just over three years after making history by opening the first sportsbook in a U.S. professional sports venue at Capital One Arena, Caesars Entertainment announced that its flagship mobile sports wagering platform expanded its reach across Washington, D.C.

BetMGM will retain exclusivity for the two-block radius surrounding Nationals Park where it operates the BetMGM Sportsbook as part of a multi-year partnership with the Washington Nationals.

1. 2024 WSOP Main Event title goes to Tamayo
Poker history unfolded inside the Horseshoe Las Vegas Events Center yesterday, as Jonathan Tamayo was crowned the 2024 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion.

Tamayo outlasted the record field of 10,112 from around the world to cash in on the $10 million first-place prize from the largest live poker tournament prize pool ever of $94,041,600.
Tamayo’s win marks the second year in a row that an American has won the WSOP Main Event after Daniel Weinman from Atlanta, Georgia, took home the undisputed world championship of poker title in 2023 to break a streak of four-straight international winners.

Niklas Astedt started the final day as the chip leader, with 223,000,000 chips, but was quickly ousted by Jordan Griff, who came into the day in third place with 187,000,000 chips. After several hands in back-and-forth heads-up play, Griff went all-in with a 9-6, while Tamayo held an 8-3. After the flop produced an 8-3-9, the turn resulted in an Ace and the river a 5, giving Tamayo the winning hand and the championship bracelet.

The 2024 Main Event bracelet features approximately 445 grams of 10-karat yellow gold with 2,253 various precious gemstones, including 1,948 round genuine diamonds, 230 black onyx stones, and 75 genuine red rubies to accentuate the suits.
