Shattered, But Not Broken

22 June 2001

While it looks like the time has come to admit that the cannot continue on its current course.... offering all the progressive jackpots and being the area's gambling mouthpiece.... and after 504 days... one surely cannot say that I did not try. Heck, all that corporate ankle nibbling I did cost me some teeth along the way.... the price of trying so hard is so far incomprehensible... but I did... I put it all on the line that surely the casinos would come to understand the benefits of my efforts to the area as a whole.... and fund the effort so that it could continue to benefit not only the casinos, but the gamblers who frequent those casinos. As my dad so aptly put it the other day, "You've taken more hits than any fighter in the ring, yet you stood up each and every time." But when even twenty bucks looks like something from a fantasy novel, then you know it all isn't going well.... in fact... it just ain't moving.... at all.

So, I think the format of what has been done for the past 61 weeks for Tahoe through this column is going to undergo some changes in the future.... less commercial, less property-related news, and more general news, including things going on in nearby Reno that are noteworthy. I keep hearing of people winning all kinds of jackpots at the Flamingo Reno.... including a fellow who got a royal in aces for $8000 last week... and the upcoming Reno Hilton concert series on August 3 in the Reno Hilton Amphitheater featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ted Nugent.... if I still have it in me to crawl that far, I am going to try.... but with the house of cards collapsing, I have no clue as to where I will be or what I will be doing. The doctor had the nerve to tell me I should avoid stress... Oh yes... something someone on a quick greased skid can avoid... even if they wanted to... easy for them to say... easy for me to say, " please just up the dosage of the blood pressure medicine to double and I will be fine."

I still don't know if I will be able to continue either of the newsletters, because I don't know how long I can continue to keep everyone from the power company to the phone company to the web hosts happy, let alone the bank that owns the rest of my life.... but if some day in the future it just goes sort of blank from this end... well, you can place your bet that one or all of the above caught up with me all at once. But please, don't ever write me off as quitting... because if there is any way on this earth that I can find to keep it all going... for my gambling friends... I will be back... maybe a little meaner... but I will be back.

Thanks to everyone who wished me well on the way, those who cried with me, supported me, shared everything with me.... I couldn't have had a better time, and loved doing it every day....and please, look for my return.... if I don't find that miracle in time on this lap.... I won't be out of the race for long.

Meanwhile, if you go to the Gambler's Pipeline Message Board on the site, you can check out what fun Jim had on his return trip to the Flamingo in Las Vegas.... day by day... what fun.... remember, he was mad over a refused comp? Well... just check it out for yourself... there is merit to what the "Gambling Gripes and Giggles" can do for people... it too is on the shaky list... but it too is part of the struggle to stay alive... and will remain so as long as I am able!

Looking for the future....
