Reno Casino Update: Back in the Saddle Again

27 July 2003

Well, the news is pretty good so far regarding the arm... surgery isn't on my options list... there were 5 breaks, and the displacement wasn't enough to have to endure any more trauma from a surgeon's knife... as in "WHEW!" I could barely make it prior to this latest disaster, so one more item off the costs bucks list is okay with me!

Silver Legacy's new weekly horse racing handicapping contest is off and running, and the first week's winners have already walked away with $1,500 in prize money. Every Wednesday, Silver Legacy will test handicappers' abilities to pick the ponies in a fun competition where entrants select winners and quinella combinations on a full day's race form. Starting with Del Mar July 23 through September 10, Silver Legacy's contest will follow the southern California circuit moving to Santa Anita Park September 28 through November 9 and Hollywood Park from November 11 to December 21. With a $10 entry fee, players have the opportunity to compete for the first place prize of $500 or second through fifth place prizes of $300, $100, $50 and $50 every week. Silver Legacy will also give away generous drawing prizes between each race with a total of five $100 cash prizes and complimentary dinners at Sterling's Seafood Steakhouse, Fairchild's Oyster Bar and Sweetwater Café. Entry forms, which must be turned in prior to the first race of the day, can be picked up at Silver Legacy's racebook. Entrants receive points equal to the dollar payout for a $2 win and a $2 quinella wager; contest prizes will be awarded to the highest scoring individuals. Full rules are available in Silver Legacy's racebook. Year-round, Silver Legacy carries horse racing from nearly a dozen different tracks in the US. Featuring a video wall that shows four races at one time and 16 seats with individual monitors, Silver Legacy is the place for horse racing fans.

Boomtown Hotel and Casino Reno has set distinctive gaming apart with a new high limit slot lounge. Set apart by an elegant half wall, the new 1,500 square-foot area reels out upscale gaming with nearly 50 $5-25 high limit video and reel machines like Double Red, White and Blue and multi-game, multi-denomination Double Double Bonus Video Poker. Nestled just west of the hotel lobby in the middle of the north casino floor, the high limit salon ushers guests through a classical column entrance and into the warm beige interior. Inside, chandeliers highlight the upscale area and an exclusive curtained lounge offers comfortable couch seating and a 42-inch plasma TV. It is a really neat room... I had been waiting to see the results behind the wall, and was really pleased with the results!

I found what is probably one of the better-run small casinos in the area last week... so if you are looking for a great place to go hang out with your friends, appreciate ticket technology, and like great food and exceptional coffee, even on the casino floor, head to Duke's Casino in Sparks. You will find a small, comfortable casino full of ticketed slots, ranging from pennies to dollars, tons of multi-game, multi-denominational slots...lots of video poker and video keno... and a great restaurant, VIVO... nothing fancy...about 9 tables... with choices for $1.99 breakfasts during the week, and tremendous racks of ribs for dinner... get your club card and you will get a couple of two for ones... and the coffee... it's STARBUCKS... and yes, it is served on the casino floor... Duke's is located right at the start of Victorian Square across from the Nugget. I like the mix of comfort, coffee and slots. In the next few days I will be adding their promotions to the RENO GAMING GUIDE so you will know what happens and when. They also have a $1000 drawing on Tuesdays... go check it out... they are in a great location for those visiting during HOT AUGUST NIGHTS which is fast approaching... from August 3 to 10... See you at Duke's!

Since I still am a one-armed typist.... this is where I have to say that I have to go...but I hope this is enough for those who still haven't discovered Reno to think about making the voyage. ESPN is still running the Great Outdoor Games from Reno, so if you need a little visual on the area, it is on ESPN! See ya in Reno!
