Hot Action, Cool Games

25 May 2003

Summer is official, at least I think it is official. The temperatures in Reno have been approaching the 90 degree mark, and the forecast for Memorial Day sounds like the perfect day for everything and anything. It's supposed to be around 72 degrees, light wind, and no precipitation... but then again... It is Memorial Day, and it is Reno, and the route over the Sierra does what it wants to and when it wants to. So if you are traveling to Reno for the holiday by car and you are crossing the mountains, leave the chains in the trunk for good measure. Stranger things have happened! At least four major ski resorts are open through Memorial Day thanks to the April bounty of snow that fell. Heavenly Valley Ski Area in South Lake Tahoe is re-opening just for the holiday weekend, they had about 8 feet of snow that fell in April, and there's plenty left for one last big bash on the slopes! Other resorts open include Squaw, Alpine Meadows, and Kirkwood.

Reno is cooking up all kinds of summer activities, all types of entertainment, all kinds of tournaments, whatever you are seeking, it probably is slated for happening in Reno! New slots over at Gold Dust West Casino include a penny progressive metered slot Beetle Bailey which has been so popular I haven't got to it yet! Boomtown Hotel and Casino is cooling down rising power costs with Power Bill Drawings that pay the power bills of monthly winners. Power Bill Drawing entries are handed out randomly to casino players. They are also easy to receive with hand-paid slot or Video Poker jackpot, straight or better Pai Gow Poker or three-of-a-kind Let It Ride hand, natural Blackjack or single Keno ticket purchased over $10. Entries are placed in the drum at the Player's Club booth. On the last day of every month, one winner is chosen and their gas and/or electric power bill paid for the month up to $500! Winners need not be present to win.

Don't forget, if you are planning on coming to Reno for some of the summer fun, that Harrah's Reno has the Xtreme Park on the Plaza, with thrills for all ages, and the outdoor entertainment happens on Sunday, May 25 at 8 p.m. when Kool & the Gang will perform a FREE concert on the Plaza at Harrah's Reno. Known for their rock anthem, "Celebration," it's a treat, and you can't beat that FREE part!

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal article, they are negotiating to buy more than 10 acres of vacant land near US Highway 395 at Longley Lane and South Virginia Street. Plans call for at least 10 theater screens, a nightclub, family arcade and upscale restaurants.

There's so much going on, and so much more to come... And Hot August Nights with the classic cars by the zillions... yep... it's fun to be in Reno. I never realized just how much fun!
