Strike Targets Harrah's Atlantic City6 October 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It was not the typical hotel wake-up call Tuesday morning for slumbering guests at Harrah's Atlantic City. "Shortly after 8 o'clock, the shrill sound of whistles and the dull thump-thump-thump of sticks beating against plastic drums pierced the air as strikers staged a protest at the front entrance of the casino hotel. "…Harrah's became the latest target of union ire in a citywide casino strike that has dragged on for five days and shows no signs of abating. No new talks are scheduled. "Local 54 of Unite Here, which represents 17,000 bartenders, cocktail servers, cooks, maids and other workers at the city's 12 casinos, has been picketing seven gaming halls that have not yet reached a contract agreement. "Under strike are Harrah's, Showboat Casino Hotel, Caesars Atlantic City, Bally's Atlantic City, the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort, Tropicana Casino and Resort and Resorts Atlantic City. "…The union and the seven holdout casinos are now deadlocked over the length of the contract. The casinos are pushing for a five-year deal, while Local 54 seeks three years. "…During their protest at Harrah's, union members shifted their picketing directly adjacent to the casino's front entrance. "…The protest was captured on videotape by Harrah's security guards. Harrah's said the union is free to picket as long as it is done legally…" |
