Red Hatters Converge at MGM Grand

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "Patricia Carreker spent her life in the usual way, getting up in the morning, going to work and coming home to make dinner for her husband.

"Monday, the 58-year-old Clarkston retiree got up, put on her red hat and told her husband he could fend for himself.

"…Carreker and about 1,500 other women of a certain age converged on MGM Grand casino Monday for Red Hat Day, a party celebrating the over-50 women's group spreading like a red and purple virus across the country.

"In the seven years since its founding, the Red Hat Society has grown to more than 1 million gaudily dressed members, filling a void by embracing older women in a society that traditionally celebrates youth.

"Monday's festivities at MGM Grand were just one of hundreds held by Red Hatters across the globe Monday marking the anniversary of the founding of the society. They were a proud if goofy-looking group, streaming off buses from across Michigan, Toledo and Windsor. Some used walkers. Some hooted at the beefy male dancers greeting them at the casino entrance.
