Michigan renews licenses for Detroit’s three casinos10 September 2026(PRESS RELEASE) -- The Michigan Gaming Control Board voted unanimously on Tuesday to renew the operating licenses of Detroit’s three commercial casinos — MGM Grand Detroit Casino, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown — at its regularly scheduled public board meeting. Before granting renewal, the Board conducted a full review of each casino’s financial standing, operational practices, and adherence to the responsible gaming requirements set out in the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act. The action keeps all three casinos operating under the state’s oversight, giving patrons continued assurance that games are fair and operators are held accountable. “Year after year, these renewals show that Detroit’s casinos continue to meet the high bar Michigan sets for operating with integrity,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “As the industry continues to evolve, our focus remains the same — protecting patrons, supporting responsible gaming, and making sure this remains an industry Michigan can be proud of.” Beyond entertainment, the casinos generate significant revenue. Under current law, the three Detroit casinos remit 19% of adjusted gross receipts in wagering taxes — split between an 8.1% share to the state and 10.9% to the City of Detroit — in addition to development agreement payments. A separate 8.4% tax applies to retail sports betting receipts, along with annual regulatory fees. Combined, these payments help fund city and state programs each year. Licenses are reviewed and renewed on an annual basis; the three commercial casinos will next be up for renewal in September 2027. |
