Legislation Allows Board Member to Keep Casino Job

"Melanie Watson had been faced with making a choice between the serving on the School Board and working at the Isle of Capri in Mississippi.

"Senate Bill 802 by Sen. Willie Mount, D-Lake Charles - signed into law by Gov. Kathleen Blanco - ended Watson's predicament. The law allows 'non-key gaming employees' to serve as elected officials.

"State law prohibits any Louisiana elected official from engaging in any business activity with a riverboat gambling licensee, except as a patron. SB802 creates an exception to the law by allowing employees - but not management or owners - of casinos to hold office if they have been employed at least two years prior to being elected and take office in 2004..."
