Lake City Casinos workers ratify deal

2 June 2008

BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Approximately 500 B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) members employed by Lake City Casinos have a new ratified contract.

Employed at casinos in Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon, the workers have voted 70% in favour of a new three-year agreement that expires on Sept. 4, 2010.

"We're pleased with the results of this vote, given the difficult round of negotiations," says BCGEU president George Heyman. "Our goal was to reach a negotiated settlement and we were able to do that. I would like to thank the members for their support during this long process."

Highlights of the agreement include additional adjustments for the lowest paid employees and greater flexibility on scheduling of work.

After turning down a previous tentative agreement, and acquiring a strike mandate from the membership, the bargaining committee was able to resume negotiations earlier this month and come to a deal with the assistance of the Labour Relations Board (LRB).

The employees work as dealers, slot machine attendants, cashiers, food and beverage servers and security personnel.
