Greektown to Stay Put13 September 2005DETROIT – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "Greektown Casino has abandoned plans to build a permanent casino at Gratiot and I-375 and instead will stay in the bustling Greektown district, where it also plans a 400-room hotel and parking structure. "The temporary casino, which opened in November 2000, would add a new 3,500-space parking garage at the corner of Monroe and St. Antoine where a city-owned lot now stands. "…Groundbreaking is planned for February; the parking garage could be ready by June 2007 and the hotel in January 2008. "The casino goes before the Michigan Gaming Control Board today to seek approval for a $635-million financing package. "…The new plan means Greektown Casino would join MotorCity Casino in staying in what were intended to be temporary locations, leaving MGM Grand Detroit Casino as the only of the three planning to build an entirely new facility. "…Staying in Greektown also helps other businesses in the district, many of them restaurants that benefit from $6 million in casino meal comps each year. The area is one of the most vibrant in the city, featuring more than 20 restaurants, and bakeries and shops. The pedestrian-friendly strip attracts large crowds on weekends…" |
