Cingular Pulling Poker Sponsorship

9 July 2004

Las Vegas Sun

LAS VEGAS --Cingular Wireless has pulled its sponsorship of the "Celebrity Poker Showdown" on the Bravo cable network. The show, which features actors and minor celebrities who play poker for charity, recently showed players drinking tequila shots and engaging in racy conversation. Episodes are filmed at the Palms hotel-casino in Las Vegas.

In a statement, NBC Universal-owned Bravo said it respected Cingular's "point of view" but said the show would go on. The network also was unapologetic about the content of the show.

"We feel strongly that the show delivers on the fun, energy and excitement of Las Vegas to a broad audience in an entertaining manner that is totally within our own point of view and guidelines," the statement read.

"Celebrity Poker Showdown" is the second highest-rated show on Bravo and continues to draw interest, the network said.

New York-based Bravo spokesman Dan Silberman declined further comment on Cingular's decision.

Representatives for Atlanta-based Cingular Wireless could not be reached for comment.
