9 May 2005
Eleven thousand must have been a dizzying height. The Dow ran up the mountain in February, got close to record levels and then turned around very quickly and ran back down the mountain to a more familiar altitude around 10,400; gaming stocks, too moved lower in March. By the end of March, most of the ... (read more)

Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - March 2005

9 May 2005
To call the current round of legislative moves and court decisions a part of the "Indian Wars" is probably trite and inaccurate. War, after all, describes a condition of battle and usually includes armies, weapons and death. Those elements are not part of the present landscape and have not been since the end of the 19th century, except in metaphor. ... (read more)

Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - November 2004

The battle has been joined in California; Governor Arnold sent a cease and desist letter to several tribes warning them that their Class II games are not Class II, but Class III. After just one year as head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, fondly known as the BIA, Dave Anderson is resigning. Bits and Pieces of Indian Country - December 2004

2 May 2005
Indian gaming celebrated twenty-five years of success and growth. Wait a minute: 25 years? That means that Indian gaming began in 1979. That isn't possible; IGRA was passed in 1988, right? Not according to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The Seminole Tribe opened a bingo hall 25 years ago. ... (read more)

Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - February 2005

2 May 2005
While the governor in Florida does his best to stop the passage of the slot legislation in Florida, saying that he doesn't want to be defined by gaming, there are those that think his resistance is simply a ploy, and his real purpose is to prevent Indian gaming in Florida. If that is the case, he has company. ... (read more)

The economy ended the year on a very high note. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the year at 10,783, the NASDAQ at 2,175 and Standard and Poor's at 1,211. All closed down at the end of January, not much, but down. Gaming stocks in general, too, were down; however, earnings' forecasts are generally good, leading one to expect gaming stocks to regain the momentum of 2004. ... (read more)

The election of 2004 is over and we have a president, the stock market is up, crude oil and gas prices are down and consumers seem ready and able to spend for the holidays.
