Sometimes it seems the journalists take pleasure in giving bad news: gas prices,
inflation, weather, or gloomy event or trend. They tell a story almost gleefully
and in a disassociated manner, telling the rest of us the pain and misery we will
suffer, leaving us feeling that the journalists must live somewhere far away that
is safe from our troubles. ... (read more)
Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - August 200513 October 2005
The continuing story of Indian country for this year and maybe next is the "off
reservation" debate. Is it possible within the limits of the National Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act for an Indian tribe to open and operate a casino on land
not part of or contiguous to its federally recognized ... (read more)

Casino revenues were up again in June (Nevada's results are for May) with a couple of exceptions, Detroit and Connecticut. The only rationalizations that I have heard are the price of gas, war and a bumpy economy. They hardly seem valid if they only apply in two places. In general, gaming is having a good year with solid if not spectacular growth. ... (read more)
Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - July 200512 September 2005
The battle in Congress over Indian sovereignty is not one that will end, ever; every Congress will have its sovereignty issues. The discussion is generally framed around gaming, but that is only because Indian gaming is the hot topic of the day. It is not only the sovereignty of Indian tribes and their ... (read more)

The economy and the stock market are not my field as is obvious to anyone reading
any of my analyses. Still they increasingly affect the gaming industry as it spreads
and matures and are, therefore, a fit subject for our consideration. This month
is typical of the confusion that economic trends cause for me. ... (read more)
Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - April 20059 September 2005
Congress is discussing Indian gaming in a number of different ways. Separate committees
are holding hearings on the National Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, tribal recognition,
off reservation casinos, lobbyists and Indian contractors. One or all of those
hearings could lead to legislation that would change the landscape of Indian gaming. ... (read more)
Quicktakes - The month's trends in a glance - May 20059 September 2005
The national economy may or may not be healthy and growing; consumers may or may not be spending more money each year. But, however one interprets national statistics and trends, gaming is clearly growing. Each year more Americans visit casinos and leave more money than the previous year.

Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - May 20059 September 2005
Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell may have retired from Congress after serving in the U. S. House from 1987 to 1993 and the U. S. Senate from 1993 to 2005, but he has not retired from politics. He joined the law firm of Holland & Knight and, as one would guess as the former chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, is a popular speaker and valued consultant. ... (read more)
Quicktakes: The month's trends at a glance - June 20059 September 2005
Summer is here, time to go on vacation, shop and, of course, visit your local casino. The price of gas following the price of crude oil shows new signs of returning to 2004 or 2003 levels. But so far that is having less effect on travel or the economy in general than one would have expected.
The AP ... (read more)
Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - June 20059 September 2005
Indian gaming is growing, maybe not as fast as in other years, but growing nevertheless. The numbers are large enough to get everyone's attention, or said another way, much too large to ignore. Indian gaming started officially in 1988 with the passage of the National Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). ... (read more)
