October gave us the annual gaming trade show - the Global Gaming Expo 2004, and
an intense, expensive and often contentious month of political campaigning. Gaming
was on the ballot in six states, as a local option or advisory vote in several
more, and was part of the platform and debate in many more states. ... (read more)
Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - October 200430 November 2004
Indian gaming was more on the fringe than at the center of voters' focuses. For
the most part, ballot issues that would impact Indian gaming were couched as attempts
to "level the playing field" or "giving the state a fair share."
Or, it might simply be termed anti-Indian: ... (read more)

Funny how news spins depending on the political party or other bias of the spinner,
the person that is interpreting the news for you. Still, there are times that
even without help the news just spins itself. Take the price of oil and its impact
on the economy. Global uncertainly pushed the price of oil above $50 a barrel. ... (read more)

California's Indian gaming industry illustrates that point: growth through expansion.
The tribes that are expanding are adding employees. But other industries in the
state perform much as in the rest of the country, that is, slow to add new jobs.
Indian gaming in California, with five renegotiated and a number of new compacts,
is growing and adding jobs. ... (read more)

The economy is not simple to describe or understand some days; if fact, without
a candidate's agenda, the economy hardly seems like one single thing and more
like a complex mix of different elements that may or may not be related. The stock
market is still hovering at the same level it was a month ago, down slightly from
the beginning of the year, but not dramatically. ... (read more)
Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - July 200416 September 2004
Indian gaming is certainly part of the move of imbedding gaming deeper into the
American culture. Indian gaming brought casinos closer to the American population
and introduced a very blue-collar kind of casino that didn't require a Las Vegas
budget or wardrobe. But the place that Indian gaming has made the biggest inroads
into our culture is politics. ... (read more)

Iraqis are governing Iraq; Iraqis are going to try Sadam. The war in Iraq may
not be over, but war pressures on the economy appear to be decreasing. Even before
the changes in Iraq, the economic news in June was generally very positive; although
the stock market at times seems to be stuck in place; ... (read more)

The big stories make the headlines. The big casinos steal the spotlight, and while
there are lots of big casinos getting bigger, such as Cache Creek, there are dozens
of smaller ones struggling along. Here are some stories from the smaller, almost
invisible Indian casinos growing a little bit at a time. ... (read more)
Bits and Pieces from Indian Country - May 200416 July 2004
California jumped out of May and raced into June with vigor. In rapid succession:
a deal was announced, four tribes have tentatively agreed to a payment of $250
million in exchange for unlimited slots; a compact with another tribe, which will
allow for an urban casino, is close to agreement; and two competing initiatives
qualified for a public vote in November. ... (read more)

The economy is still showing healthy growth, even in jobs. The war, gas prices
and the possibility of increased interest rates may lurk on the horizon, but the
short term forecast is for sunshine and economic growth. Gaming stocks fared worse
than the broader market, but as one wise analyst said, one month does not make
a trend. ... (read more)
