Ask the Slot Expert: Who counts the hands played on a video poker machine?

28 March 2012
Hi John Thanks for all your wonderful articles. As a local in Las Vegas, I mostly patronize and play video poker at a neighborhood poker bar. I am a well-seasoned video poker player for over 10 years, and I am a marathon player, oftentimes playing on one machine for up to 18 hours straight. We all know that the odds of getting a royal flush are about 1 in 42,000. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: How does the casino pay for prizes?

21 March 2012
John, here's a question I would like answered. More and more casinos are giving away gifts, cars, cash and drawings, etc. Where does the money come from? Is it from their net profit (i.e., the 10 percent on slots) or gross money taken in? If it's gross then a player doesn't really get the 90 percent ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Is the RNG affected by the amount I bet?

14 March 2012
Hello John, Does the RNG operate on the amount you bet per spin or on the symbols? My wife was playing a progressive slot machine the other day and was rotating her bet from minimum to maximum bet. She hit the progressive with a minimum bet much to her dismay and felt she lost out on the $256,000 payout. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: The effect of playing with a player's card

7 March 2012
Dear John, Thanks for your column. Love the info. I am one who will try anything I can to trigger my machine. In fact, I really did think it was "just luck", when I first started playing and winning, over 25 years ago. Playing in Vegas, Laughlin, Tunica, New Mexico & La. But, the more I play the ... Ask the Slot Expert: Is it illegal to use someone else's player's card?

29 February 2012
John, Is it illegal to play slots using someone else's card (non family member)? A host told my friend it was illegal. Thanks, Mike Dear Mike, Illegal may be too strong a word, but it could be against the rules. In the early days of electronic slot clubs, cheats would collect a number of "replacement" cards and put them in machines throughout a casino. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Making sense of a slot play win/loss statement

22 February 2012
I received my win/loss statement from the casino. It showed three columns: Total W/2G = $30,000      Slot Win = $1,800      Total Win = $1,800 I called the casino as I couldn't make sense of it--I won $30,000 but ended the year with only $1,800 in winnings. The customer service people told me that I had won the $30,000 and then put it back and lost it. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Number of coins played can affect long-term payback

15 February 2012
Hi John. Here's a question that I would like answered in your fine column. I believe that slots are programmed for their various payouts. I know you say that the RNG is the determining factor, but could you explain to me -- if a slot's payout is, let's say, 85 percent, is that based on max coins in or ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: More on gambling and taxes

8 February 2012
Hi John, I read your column via my e-mail and look forward to each time you send it. You do a great job of informing the slot gambler. I just read the article from Mike the Tax Preparer. The casinos would go out of business if we had to file taxes the way Mike thinks they should be. I and many others would just stop playing the slots. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Dealing with slot players who smoke in the non-smoking section

1 February 2012
It really ticks me off when I’m in the "No Smoking" section of the casino and people are smoking. My question is what do you do when someone is smoking near you? I’m not the type of person to go over to them and politely point out that they are in a "No Smoking" section when signs are plastered everywhere. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Is it rude to stare at a slot player?

29 January 2012
Hi John: I was wondering your stance on if it's considered bad etiquette when people stand behind you while you are playing and literally stare at you the entire time you play. I notice this in certain casinos in PA and NJ, and find it absurd. Is it just me -- or is this considered bad etiquette in a ... (read more)
