Ask the Slot Expert: Do video poker pay tables matter to casual players?

27 May 2012
John, I'm a long time reader and appreciate your advice. I have two questions: one has a definite answer and the other probably doesn't. First question: I'm a longtime video poker player in AC and recently I've begun to enjoy the triple play machines. The jackpot hand is 5 aces dealt. On a .25 machine the jackpot is usually in the 60k range. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Can slot machines only be changed at the factory?

23 May 2012
Hello John, Today your column was about free spins/payouts. You mentioned the club might have changed the payout program. I have always been told the machines can only be changed at the factory. The payout is set at the factory. I don't believe all this. We went to a small casino in Southern Colorado to a Motorcycle Club Bike Rally. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: More wild symbols means more excitement

16 May 2012
John: Your info about reel strips was interesting, but you forgot one important point. Slot machine players want to get excited playing slots, even if they do not win. It's hard to get excited playing a machine with just one wild symbol in each reel, regardless what the virtual reel comes up ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Can identical slots have different bonus probabilities?

9 May 2012
I have two slot machine questions that I've wondered about for some time. It seems like you'd be the perfect person to ask. 1. When slot manufacturers construct the slot games, do they or the casino purchasers determine what the min/max payback percentage figures will be? In the tribal compacts that I've read the minimum payback for "non-skill" slots is in most cases 80 percent. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: VLT video poker tips

2 May 2012
Any tips for VLT video poker machines? Mike Dear Mike, Yes, one tip. Treat them like slot machines. Unlike the Class III video poker machines you find in Las Vegas, Tunica, Atlantic City and other places, VLT video poker machines do not determine the results of hands played on them. The outcome of ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: How do casinos figure slot comps?

29 April 2012
My wife and I got to Hollywood Casino in Indiana to hopefully win and naturally along the way pay our dues for the beautiful casino. We both have Celebrity Comp cards and use them religiously. I probably spend a little more than my wife, but when the comps come through, she always has $5 or $10 more than ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Where can I find a PAR sheet for a slot machine?

25 April 2012
I would like to know where I can find the PAR sheet of a slot machine? Do you want the PAR sheet for a particular slot machine? That will be almost impossible to get. First, you have to find out which payback program a casino specified for the machine. Most machines have multiple payback programs available for them. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Do video poker machines still deal from a fair deck?

18 April 2012
When I first started playing video poker in Las Vegas some years ago, all the machines had a sticker stating that all deals were from a 52-card deck. During recent trips to Las Vegas and to the local Indian casino I could find no such stickers.Their removal would indicate to me that, now that all ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot trouble down under

4 April 2012
I have a question for you. I play the 'slots' or poker machines as we call them in Australia a lot. I play a particular machine I like at a particular club I like. Over the years, these machines have been good and bad to me, but we used to get 'free spins' quite often, not that they all paid a lot, ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Do slot manufactures update software regularly?

28 March 2012
John, I have been researching the RNG process used in current-day casino slot machines and found the process a bit confusing. First of all, the programmers use a process called seeding sometimes using a combination of date and time as input to the random number generator. It seems to me, if this was true, the generated numbers would tend to be greater as the day grew longer. ... (read more)
