Ask the Slot Expert: Are casinos and slots tighter today?

14 November 2012
Hello John, I recently surfed on to your website. I’m a long time slot player and I guess wishing for the good old days again. I hope your expert advice might help. First let me give you a brief history. I live in NC and frequent Vegas a few times a year. I started going to Vegas with my father in the 1980s and have fond memories of that time. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: How do new slot machines figure out how much to pay?

7 November 2012
New slot machines are placed on the casino floor with a preset payback percentage, meaning in the long run the amount they pay depends on how much money is spent by customers. The question, John, is, since they are new and no one has played them before, how do they calculate how much to pay the early ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Why was money withheld from my jackpot?

24 October 2012
Anyone who has played the slots can tell you it's no pRNG when the same numbers comes up 3-4-5 times in a row just above the line or just below the line. How can that be RNG or pRNG? If it happens once, OK -- but not when you go to a different machine and it's the same thing. You're making a mistake ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Where can I find Silver Strike slots?

17 October 2012
Hi, Recently, someone from player development at a casino I frequent sent me an e-mail with an attached file by mistake. The file is a list of the casino's 5,000 top rated players. I'm thinking of approaching player development in another local casino to see if the list is of any interest to them. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: How does number of coins played affect long-term payback?

11 October 2012
I have decided that I much prefer playing the Deuces Wild Bonus Video Poker. I especially like the ones that pay a progressive for the Royal Flush, 5 Aces and 4 Deuces. Some of them also have a progressive for other 4 of a kinds. Is this as good a game as Jacks or Better? Is there an easy ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Can casinos change the way slot games play?

3 October 2012
Dear John, Love your articles! My question is: Are casinos allowed to make changes in the way games play? I have been playing Three Kings slot machines and have done well on them, however just recently the casinos in Arizona seem to have changed the way they play. And it's obvious too. Before, ... Ask the Slot Expert: Which machines pay better?

26 September 2012
In a recent question the person asked (in part): You press the stop button and the RNG takes a number the "seed" which I understand to be typically based on the milliseconds... Which brings up my question. He said when you hit "STOP." When you hit stop and don't just let the reels spin to completion, ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Stopping the reels on a slot machine

19 September 2012
Here is a question for you. On machines that have the bonus triggered by scatter symbols (as compared to bonuses that trigger when you get three on a pay line), an interesting strategy emerges. Just play 1 line, 1 coin. Your bankroll will last a long time and the bonus will trigger anyway. I know that many bonuses are multiples of coins played, so those bonuses won't pay a lot. ... Ask the Slot Expert: Should I play more lines on a slot machine or more coins per line?

12 September 2012
John, Love your column. Always look forward to it, and to your great input. Told my friends about you. My question is: Are the odds better if you play 100 lines (max) x 2 cents (least), 50 lines x 5 cents, or 25 lines x 10 cents, and so on, on any one machine? I would appreciate your feedback as I ... Ask the Slot Expert: Do casinos remove machines if they pay too much?

5 September 2012
Hi John, I am trying to better understand volatility ratings of slot games. I understand the basic tenet that volatility is the measurement of how the player’s bankroll is affected for the period of time that it takes to reach the long-term payback percentage. But I don’t understand how to analyze the numbers. ... (read more)
