Ask the Slot Expert: Telling which slot machines are going to hit

4 June 2014
I am going to Atlantic City for the first time in about five years. I like the slots, especially ones that have a cute bonus round. I have learned that I can make a little playing 5-cent machines compared to playing higher denominations that pay less often. Are there any indications as to which machines ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Do casinos change slot machine paybacks when revenue is down?

28 May 2014
I live in Connecticut where there is no state supervision of the two largest casinos in the country, Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun. The agreement between the state and both tribes was that part of the revenue generated by slots would be given to the state and that each casino would have complete jurisdiction over their casinos. ... Ask the Slot Expert: How often do casinos move slot machines?

21 May 2014
How often do casino move machines around and change them out? Pretty much as often as they want. Some casinos have a designated area in which they put new machines. That area will get changed frequently because machines stay there for a week or more and then either move off the slot floor or to a more permanent home on the floor. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: 100% hit frequency does not mean 100% payback

14 May 2014
My question is how can a player be a "professional" video poker player when all they can expect to do is maybe make one or at most two percent including comps and incentives? I play deuces wild almost exclusively and enjoy it very much. I am probably not at expert play, but I have a lot of fun. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Changing bingo cards on Class II slot machines

7 May 2014
The past articles regarding taxes on gambling winnings/losses have been very interesting. My question is about deducting losses from winnings. How detailed a gambling record does one need to maintain to satisfy the IRS requirements? And what should one detail? Any winnings over $1199 result in a W2-G ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Why are slot payoffs expressed for-1 and not to-1?

30 April 2014
Note: This letter refers to last week's question about deducting gambling losses from an amount won in a drawing. Why did they get a 1099 instead of a W2-G? It doesn't matter what your gambling losses are from -- slots, lottery, horse races etc. All your gambling losses can be deducted up to the amount of your winnings but not over your winning amount. ... Ask the Slot Expert: I win more on slots when I don't use my players card

23 April 2014
We just filed our taxes with the help of our "tax guy" and got a rude awakening about our gambling deductions. My wife and I had an exceptional year, winning over $15,000 in cash and prizes in drawings, but our actual gambling was not successful at all, losing about that much. In previous years, our tax ... Ask the Slot Expert: Can casinos manipulate your slot play via your players card?

16 April 2014
Can you explain how the following scenario happened? I'm a Silver cardholder at a local casino. I play slots most of the time. After losing a bit, I decided to switch machines and go to the second floor, where the points earned when you play are doubled. After playing 20 minutes or so, I decided to order coffee from a waitress. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Are high-denomination slots programmed differently?

9 April 2014
While I was walking through a casino in Central City, Colorado, I noticed that the casino had a designated "high stakes" group of machines. One of these high stakes machines was a $100 per bet machine! Wow! I was wondering if these high dollar machines use a different pay-out formula than a penny or ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Do slot machines compensate for big payouts?

2 April 2014
On a slot machine that is a multiplier machine, after a big payout on the maximum bet, will the machine compensate for the payout? Or does the next spin on the machine have the same odds as before the big payout? It doesn't matter whether a machine is a multiplier, bonus multiplier, multi-line ... (read more)
