Ask the Slot Expert: Did my video poker machine malfunction?

20 August 2014
Last night I was sitting next to a gentleman who was playing the Wicked Winnings slot machine and he hit the She Devils with several Ravens. When the total win was finally tallied, it came out to $1,204.60. So this fellow was just $5.60 over the $1,199.00 magic number and received a 1099. Here is my ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Are players' clubs useful for quarter slot players?

13 August 2014
I'd like your opinion on the following casino marketing strategy. Empire City Casino sends me e-mails showing big jackpot winners. [Images of a $10,209.29 hit from a $5 bet on a Quick Hit Platinum machine and a $12,866,84 hit from a 40-cent bet on a Cash Spin machine were attached.] They have over 5,000 slots, so your odds are still high. ... Ask the Slot Expert: Can you beat video poker?

6 August 2014
I often play slot machines where you can change the denomination of how much you want to bet (penny, two cents, nickel, dime, etc.) Since it's the same machine, are my odds any better playing a higher denomination? The answer is a definite maybe. Some video poker machines are multi-denomination. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Why do I lose on slots one day and win the next?

30 July 2014
I have a question about what has become my favorite slot game, IGT's Ghosts Wild, which I have been playing at the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland. The bonus is eight free spins. My question is this: Is the outcome of the bonus spins set when I hit the button for the original spin (which won the bonus), or when I hit the button to start the bonus spins? Actually, neither. ... Ask the Slot Expert: Slot machines always hit on the last spin?

23 July 2014
My rebuttal to a statement that slots always hit on the last spin in last week's column generated a number of responses. Excerpts from some of them follow in this week's column. I like to read your column, but I also disagree with some of the things you report. Like the person who said that many times the big win comes on the last spin, I have been witness to this same thing... ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Slot machines hit on the last spin

16 July 2014
Slot machines do hit on the last spin. And I hit most jackpots when I drop my bet from three quarters to one quarter. This is a fact. I've been gambling for 30 years and have seen this happen to me and other people too often. Please explain this fact. Also if a machine paid randomly, the casino would be gambling. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Do slot machines try to win back money?

9 July 2014
How long does it take a machine to get back into the paying mode? I was at Paragon Casino in Marksville, Louisiana, on Saturday night. I won some money on the X-Streem machine after staying on it practically for hours. It’s one of those that has three bonus jackpots at the top of the machine. It says $64.56 Orange, $80.34 White and $90.26 Red. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Multi-hand video poker and comps

2 July 2014
I know that playing multi-hand video poker doesn't improve your odds of winning, but I wondered how it is affects the likelihood of a royal appearing. A royal appears about every 44,000 hands. That's a lot of hands if you're playing single-hand video poker. If you're playing 100-hand video poker, is ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Video poker paytables go down for many reasons

25 June 2014
The video poker paytables at Spirit Mountain, Oregon, were changed over the last few weeks. The 9/6 Jacks or Better Game King Uprights games were changed to 8/5 (98.5 percent return). The older, and better-paying machines, are being replaced with newer lower-paying multi-game machines. Clearly the days of video poker are over not just in Las Vegas, but in the Indian casinos as well. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Cold winter means bad video poker in Wisconsin?

18 June 2014
It may not have been true in Connecticut that paytables were changed when slot revenue was down, but I can tell you firsthand that this was done here in northern Wisconsin after one of the snowiest and coldest winters on record. In late April I was in our local casino, Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel, on a Tuesday night and then again on Friday of the same week. ... (read more)
