Ask the Slot Expert: Changing the minimum bet on a slot machine

7 December 2016
Question: I play Double Double Bonus Poker at the Parx Casino in Pennsylvania. I have always wondered if I'm playing a VLT or RNG machine. At times I have been dealt two pair and discard one of them and still get two pair. Or if I hold just the high cards, I get the same payoff. This was my shot at ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Intro to the random number generator

30 November 2016
Question: what is the difference between the VLT machines at the racinos and the slot machines at the Vegas-style casinos? Answer: The only thing I can say for sure about a VLT versus a slot machine is that the VLT is operated by a state lottery, hence "video lottery terminal." Some VLTs operate the ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Casino loosens slots for certain players?

23 November 2016
Question: As always, enjoy your articles and expert insights, but I'm gonna complain here a bit. My son gets me a subscription to Casino Player magazine every Christmas. I am getting the issues a month late. I get October issue in November, for example, so any offers, shows, etc., are over by the time I get the magazine. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Are casinos afraid of players winning on slots?

9 November 2016
Question: You wrote: Based on reports from 88 Fortunes players, it's possible to hit the Grand jackpot on less than a max-coin bet. Also, your choices during the pick-em bonus round are irrelevant because the program running the machine has already chosen which progressive you will win. If you’re tapping ... (read more)

Question: Can you shed some light on a sticky situation? During the non-winter months, when we go to Arizona and Nevada, if we want to play video poker we are stuck playing at the Potawatomi casinos (Milwaukee and Carter) and Mohican North Star in Wisconsin. They are full of video poker machines that ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Finding a Benjamin in a bill acceptor

26 October 2016
Question: I entered the High Limit room to play some free play given to me by the casino. The machine I chose had a $100 bill in the money slot. Perhaps the previous person put his money in and the machine kicked it out as not acceptable. I sat there a while waiting for someone to return. I thought about pushing it back into the machine and playing. ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: Resources for new video poker players

19 October 2016
Comment: Referring to banning smoking in casinos, in Biloxi, Mississippi, the Palace went nonsmoking building-wide a few years ago, and both staff and players seem very content. The Golden Nugget and Beau Rivage have gone nonsmoking in all but the gaming floors. Both also have select nonsmoking areas, ... (read more)

Ask the Slot Expert: The difference between house hold and house edge

12 October 2016
Question: I have a question about casino hold as it relates to table games versus slot machines. According to UNLV the average hold in Nevada for table games (21, baccarat, craps, roulette) is 11 to 19 percent. The average statewide hold for slots is only five to seven percent. Every article I've ever read advises me to play table games because of the low house edge compared to slots. ... (read more)
