John Robison Gaming Guru - Page 17Ask the Slot Expert: Sample size works both ways20 September 2023
A few months ago I wrote about how the relatively small bankroll I had been allocating for a casino visit led me to have a disappointing number of sessions in which I ran out of money before I had played the number of hands I wanted to play to keep on pace with requalifying for an upper tier in the slot ... Ask the Slot Expert: Banned for complaining?13 September 2023
Question: First, I would like to say thank you for this column. It has provided much interesting, informative reading.
My subject is a sad one. I was banned from the casino closest to my home (150 miles each way}, along with all of their properties. I will say that it is the tightest place I'v ever been to, besides one Indian property in Northern CA. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: How do you track the number of hands you play in a session?6 September 2023
Question: I truly enjoy your articles about slots, and in particular, video poker.
I noticed that in many of your articles you talk about about the number of hands you play. How do you track this during your sessions? I am not aware of any way to track this through your players card or on the machines themselves. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: My casino "good luck" charms30 August 2023
I don't believe in talismans or trying to influence a machine to bring me good luck. I don't do the things I've seen some people do, like putting a family photo on the screen, putting a good luck charm on the machine, or tapping the screen to try to get a reel to stop on a particular symbol.
That said, I'm not above trying to get the gods of good fortune to lean a little on my side sometimes. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Ruin, variance, and video poker23 August 2023
A few weeks ago, I referred to Helping You Understand Bankroll Needs - Volatility on Jean Scott's Frugal Vegas blog that contained an article called "Understanding Variance" by Henry Tamburin.
Variance is a well defined statistical formula. It measures how far a set of numbers is spread out from the set's average value.

Ask the Slot Expert: Another look at video poker volatility16 August 2023
I started writing last week's column with the theory that NSU Deuces is more volatile than 9/6 Jacks because 9/6 Jacks pays a push more frequently than NSU does and, moreover, 9/6 Jacks hit frequency is higher than NSU's hit frequency. When I gathered the data to prove these points, I discovered that they ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Is it my fault I leave the casino with an empty wallet?9 August 2023
Over the past few weeks, I've written about how I leave the casino with an empty wallet much more frequently than I used to. The machines haven't changed, so I've been blaming this run of bad luck on -- well -- a run of bad luck.
But maybe there's more going on here than I realized. Maybe I'm partly to blame. ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Can video poker auto-hold be trusted?2 August 2023
Question: My wife and I recently spent two nights at Barona Casino in San Diego, and 90% of their VP had auto-hold enabled.
Are you familiar with this and if so, can the hold suggestions be trusted? Are they game and pay-table specific? Are they created by the machine manufacturers, or by the ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: My bad luck at video poker can't last forever26 July 2023
My luck at NSU has been very bad the past few weeks. I rarely leave a machine with a profit or even a small loss. I've almost always had to quit because I’ve used up my session bankroll before reaching my point goal.
My first stop on a casino visit is to the cage to take out another marker -- at least ... (read more)
Ask the Slot Expert: Do slot clubs count your entire bet on Double Down Stud?19 July 2023
Question: I play video poker in Atlantic City. Borgata mostly. I play Double Down Stud where you can double down your first bet if you like the cards you see.
My question is: Does the casino count both the initial 5-credit bet AND the double down credits towards your player card rewards? Or just the initial bet?
Answer: Double Down Stud is the easiest video poker game to play. ... (read more)
