Those great BIG wins

19 December 2013
I’m not a high roller by any means, and there are no $20,000 slot jackpots or $10,000 runs at the craps tables on my resume. Mostly, I stick to $5 and $10 tables, and 25-cent video poker. When my wife and I play together, it’s usually on penny slots. So when people ask about my largest casino win, it’s easy to pick one. ... (read more)

Come-out bets versus put bets

15 December 2013
QUESTION: I made a mistake at craps table, and now I’m wondering if it really was a mistake. I bought in, and bet on the pass line. The next roll was a 6, and I was getting ready with the odds, when the dealer paid me. It turns out I hadn’t noticed it wasn’t the come-out, that there was already a point, and it was 6. ... Figuring out video poker machines

12 December 2013
At most video poker games, it’s a simple task to tell the higher-paying games from the real coin gobblers. The big payers have higher paybacks on full houses and flushes. Barring some rare switch elsewhere on the pay table, a 9-6 Jacks or Better game, where full houses pay 9-for-1 and flushes 6-for-1, pays more than an 8-5 game. ... (read more)

The truth about the numbers

8 December 2013
QUESTION: I don’t get why you say the pass line is a better bet than placing 6 or 8. If you bet pass, you have to take the times that the point is 4 or 10, where it’s a lot more likely that you lose. I want the best numbers all the time. ANSWER: The main thing you’re missing here is effect of the come out roll. ... (read more)

Can you bet with the house?

5 December 2013
Nearly every casino table game has strategies that occur to everyone who moves past the beginner’s stage and starts trying to understand how the games work. If hitting all 16s and under and standing on all 17s and above works for the blackjack dealer, why shouldn’t it work for the player? Doesn’t betting ... (read more)

The best video poker strategies

1 December 2013
QUESTION: We play Double Double Bonus Poker and Triple Double. Recently we discovered Super Double Double at Revel, which has been very lucky. Sometimes, you talk about perfect strategy, expert play and average players. Can you explain expert strategy versus average play in playing video poker? We use same strategy in all three games and Jacks or Better as well. ... (read more)

The trinity of slot machines

28 November 2013
In the slot machine business, there’s a distinction between revenue-sharing games and core games, or for-sale games. Most of the biggest, brightest, sexiest games with licensed themes are revenue-sharing games. But the core games are workhorses. Most casino slot directors prefer that the bulk of their floors be filled with games the casino owns. ... (read more)

The 6/5 blackjack games

24 November 2013
QUESTION: You’ve often advised blackjack players not to play if blackjacks pay 6-5 instead of 3-2. My question is, just how bad does that make the game? Isn’t blackjack still a better game with the lower payoff than almost anything else in the casino? ANSWER: Let’s first look at the difference between a blackjack game with 3-2 payoffs vs. ... The new casino games

21 November 2013
Most new table games come in two varieties: variations on blackjack and variations on poker. So naturally, anything really novel catches my eye when I walk the display floor at the annual Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. Double Ball Roulette, from Vegas Game Points, is one of those eye-catchers. Already ... (read more)

The best of video poker and roulette

17 November 2013
QUESTION: You have said that for a serious video poker player, it is best if a person sticks to the following machine: 9-6 Double Double Bonus Poker with full houses paying 9-for-1 and flushes paying 5-for-1. You went on to say that an expert player could then expect as much as a 98.98 percent return, with the equivalent house edge of only 1.02 percent. ... (read more)
