John Grochowski Gaming Guru - Page 92Legal online gambling16 January 2014
Legal online gambling on casino-style games has yet to reach the toddler stage in the United States, with Nevada having launched online poker and New Jersey and Delaware coming on board with a broader range of games, all in 2013. Even in those jurisdictions, wagers must come from players within the state. ... (read more)
21 years in the casinos!15 January 2014
As 2014 turns into 2015, it means I’ve been writing about casinos and casino games on a weekly-or-more basis for 21 years. When I was first asked to do this column, there was a steep learning curve, and part of that curve was learning how to handle being in casinos for a three-day trip once a year to exploring casino floors twice a week or more. ... Quit while you're ahead12 January 2014
QUESTION: The other day, my brother-in-law said, “It always seems like you’re ahead sometime whenever you go to the casino. If only you could bring yourself to quit while you’re ahead, you’d do all right.” We laughed, then got to talking. If you won your first $10 blackjack bet, you probably wouldn’t leave. ... It IS what meets the eye9 January 2014
QUESTION: I came across a slot machine that had both free-spin and second-screen bonuses. To get the free spins, you had to have special symbols and the first, third and fifth reels. For the second screen, the bonus symbols had to be on the second, third and fourth reels. Is that a way to make sure you get ... (read more)
Smart craps play8 January 2014
For players who take craps seriously, the next step after learning the basics of how to play usually is to probe deeper into the possibilities presented by the dozens of bets and hundreds of potential combinations available. Is there a weakness that can be exploited? Is there a synergy between Bet A and Bet ... (read more)
Everyone has a system5 January 2014
When I first started writing about casinos and casino games, I used to have people pitching systems to me all the time. “You’ll want to talk to me,” one fellow’s phone message started. “I’m the only one who knows how to beat craps.” He phoned me off and on for three years, and finally sent me a detailed computer simulation. ... Expert strategy at video poker2 January 2014
I often receive requests asking just what is meant by “expert strategy” in video poker. Does what you hold really make a difference? Is the strategy different in different games? The answers are yes, and yes. In licensed casinos in nearly all U.S. jurisdictions, cards must be dealt from a randomly shuffled, 52-card electronic deck. ... (read more)
Do blackjacks prevent future blackjacks?29 December 2013
QUESTION: Betting $25 a hand, when I get a blackjack I’m paid $32.50. (I only play where I get 3-2 payoffs on blackjacks. I won’t put up with any of that 6-5 nonsense.) I then make a $2.50 bet for the dealer, and up my bet to $30 for the next hand, so I put the regular $25 in winnings in my stack and reinvest the rest. ... (read more)
Payouts26 December 2013
In the decades when three-reel games ruled slot floors, it was easy to know how to get the most of out the games. It took maximum-coin bets to get the highest payback percentages, and average returns were best at highest coin denominations. Betting the max was a must to be eligible for progressive jackpots. ... The joy of pai gow poker22 December 2013
QUESTION: I’ve been playing pai gow poker a lot lately, and find that I can play for pretty long. It’s not the most exciting game in the world, since there are a lot of pushes where I win one hand and the dealer wins the other. But I can make my money last while my wife is at the slots, and I’ve had some nice streaks. ... (read more)
