QUESTION: Another blackjack player at my table was playing so that he never busted. He’d split pairs and double down according to basic strategy. He’d even play soft hands according to basic strategy, until they became hard hands. But he wouldn’t bust. He stood on every hard 12 or higher, no matter what the dealer had. ... (read more)
Players share experiences29 May 2014
From time to time, players relay stories of their casino exploits -- big wins, tough losses, unusual hands or promotions they’ve liked. Let’s let a few players tell us of their experiences with customer service and promotions, for better or worse. Carly: I got a mailer that said on the promotion date, I could come pick up a free toaster oven. ... (read more)
Multipliers and bonus bets25 May 2014
QUESTION: At most places where I play, Mississippi Stud Poker has a three-card bonus bet. Is this a good bet or not? ANSWER: The Mississippi Stud three-card bonus is the same as the Pair Plus option on Three-Card Poker. The house edge depends on the pay table. If you're getting 40-1 on straight flushes, ... Switching games without switching strategies22 May 2014
Switching from one video poker game to the next often means big strategy changes on up. Versions of Double Bonus Poker that pay 7-for-1 on flushes and 5-for-1 on straights are far different games than Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker or even Double Double Bonus Poker. But in some games, we can lope along with Jacks or Better strategy with minimal tinkering. ... (read more)
Playing two machines at once18 May 2014
QUESTION: I was walking through the video poker area, and saw a guy playing two machines at once. He was touching the screen to hold and draw instead of using the buttons, and going back and forth so fast it made my head spin. I said in passing, “I don’t think I could do that.” He never looked up and never ... (read more)
Splitting fives at blackjack15 May 2014
Very little happens at the blackjack table that surprises me. I’ve been playing a very long time, and I take other players’ strategic idiosyncrasies in stride. Still, it gave me pause in early April when a 30-ish fellow at my table was dealt a pair of 5s and the dealer turned up a 6 in a six-deck game in ... (read more)
Team play at blackjack and roulette odds11 May 2014
QUESTION: Can you tell me anything about slot machines that also have a bingo logo with numbers being drawn while the reels are spinning? My wife and I were visiting her sister and brother-in-law, and they took us to a casino we’d never been to before. They had a lot of these kinds of games. They seemed to play like regular slots, but I’d never seen the bingo thing before. ... (read more)
Casino evolution8 May 2014
Casinos are constantly changing, something that’s obvious to anyone who plays the games. The rise of video slots and their ever-changing features, multihand video poker games, tougher blackjack rules and the rise of new table games such as Mississippi Stud are all noticeable changes. But casino evolution is constant away from the games, too. ... (read more)
Slot machine comps4 May 2014
QUESTION: I understand how casino comps are entered by the casino floor person for table games. They enter into the computer your average bet and length of time played and which game you played. But, how about slot machines? If I always use my casino reward card when I play slots does it also only look at ... (read more)
Riverboat Roulette1 May 2014
New slot games take their places in casinos every day. When a new table game gets a nod, it’s noteworthy. Sometimes years pass between the first time I see a new game demonstrated at Global Gaming Expo and the time I see it in a casino. Often, I never see the games on casino floors, although many carve out niches overseas and online. ... (read more)
