Weird roulette results

6 July 2014
QUESTION: I have one for your strange happenings file. I was playing roulette, $5 table, $1 chips, mixing up inside and outside bets – colors, single numbers, streets and corners. I was about holding my own, and then this weird streak happened. I wasn’t on it from the beginning, but the ball landed on No. ... (read more)

Huge progressive slots arriving now

As I sit down to write this on the first Sunday in March, there is a $1.034 million jackpot building on dollar Wheel of Fortune slot machines in Mississippi. In New Jersey, the same game has a top prize building past $940,000, while in Nevada, it is past $1.908 million and counting. Shadow of the panther and vouchers

29 June 2014
QUESTION: Can you tell me about a slot machine called Shadow of the Panther? I’d never played it before, and I did pretty good. Won about $40, so that’s not too bad for a penny slot. I just wasn’t quite sure how I was doing it. Sometimes I’d get the black panther on the first and second reels, and get a little payback. ... (read more)

Can you figure the odds at slots?

26 June 2014
On just about every casino game, the house gets its edge from paying winners less than true odds. That goes for slot games just as it does on the tables. However, players don’t get enough information to do the math and calculate true odds. That doesn’t stop some players from trying to apply a little tallying and arithmetic of their own. ... Selective memory

22 June 2014
QUESTION: THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS! I go to the casino, and play the penny slots. Within the first 10 minutes, I hit something good, maybe two or three bonus rounds real fast, and I find myself ahead $20 or $30. Then I start losing, so I change machines. I lose some more there, and then go to another machine and keep losing. ... (read more)

Moving from slots to video poker

19 June 2014
Karl is a video poker convert, a slot player who decided to give video poker a go when he learned of its higher payback percentages. “I still play some penny slots,” he wrote in an e-mail. “The bonuses are fun.” Mostly, he plays Deuces Wild, but mixes in some other games. On a recent trip, he found a casino that offered full-pay 10-7-5 Double Bonus Poker. ... (read more)

Comps for slots, blackjack and video poker are not the same

15 June 2014
QUESTION: Two friends and I play each week. One friend takes about $500-$600 bankroll and plays Wizard of Oz penny machines almost exclusively. Another takes $500-$800 and plays blackjack, $25-$50 a hand. I take a $600-$800 bankroll and play quarter and 50-cent Double Double Bonus or Triple Double Bonus video poker machines. ... Class I, II and III slot machines

12 June 2014
Regardless of whether you’re playing in Atlantic City, Las Vegas or points in between, most slot machines work the same way. Each game has its own random number generator, and the numbers it generates determines what you see on the reels. There are other ways to go about it, including Class II games in some Native American casinos. ... (read more)

Baccarat card counting and stacked symbols

8 June 2014
QUESTION: You’ve written about baccarat having a low house edge, and so I gave it a try. I found it boring. The cards are all played out by rule, you don’t get to decide whether to hit or stand. The other players seemed really into it, so maybe it’s just me. What did intrigue me was that players were tracking the hands on paper. ... (read more)

Ben Affleck and card counting

5 June 2014
In early May, as news spread of Ben Affleck being banned from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, I had inquiries on a number of fronts. Readers e-mailed, friends phoned, and I was asked to chime in on radio stations in Chicago and Los Angeles. Affleck, who played online gambling tycoon ... (read more)
