Three Card Poker, video roulette and blackjack

23 April 2015
QUESTION: I played Three Card Poker for the first time. It was really easy to pick up, and I did OK. One thing threw me a little. On the Pair Plus, I looked at the payoffs on the table felt, and it said straights paid 6-1 and flushes 3-1. I asked the dealer, “Is that a typo on your table? I’ve never played ... (read more)

It's all about Aces

19 April 2015
QUESTION: I have a blackjack strategy question. I was playing in a casino that allowed you to split Aces more than once. I don’t think I’d ever seen that before. I split, and when I got another Ace, I groaned because I thought I was stuck with 12. Instead, the dealer paused, and it took me a second to realize he was waiting for me to make another decision. ... (read more)

Super Times Pay

19 April 2015
When it comes to wide-area progressive slot machines with huge, lifestyle-changing jackpots, International Game Technology has been the leader since the very beginning. IGT introduced Megabucks in 1986 as the first WAP – games in which players at different casinos can chase the same jackpot, which builds with every bet made at any participating casino. ... Roulette systems

16 April 2015
When I play roulette, I stick to the low-roller tables and don’t bet much above the minimum. The house edge of 5.26 percent on nearly all bets on a double-zero wheel is too steep for my liking, so I use roulette as a little diversion, an interlude between blackjack or video poker sessions. Still, I get a lot of entertainment value out of watching other players. ... (read more)

Is there a flaw in blackjack strategy?

12 April 2015
QUESTION: Do you know anything about a supposed flaw in blackjack basic strategy? I’ve been reading an online message board with all kinds of talk about this flaw. They say that the original basic strategy calculations had a flaw, and that other have just copied the strategy and picked up the same flaw for decades. ... (read more)

Comps and coupons

9 April 2015
On my first casino trip many, many years ago, I was vaguely aware that casinos gave away meals, rooms and show tickets. Exactly how that worked, I didn’t know, until I signed up for my first slot club. I quickly learned to take what was offered, but not to overbet my bankroll in pursuit of comps. Other ... Is a 'free ride' random or controlled?

5 April 2015
QUESTION: I love playing a video poker machine called "Five Play Multi-Strike Poker." The game gives a free ride up to the next playing level at supposed random times. I understand how the human mind can trick us and make us feel something is less random than it is supposed to be. But, during my last ... (read more)

The Romance of Fire and Rain

2 April 2015
Rolling out new slot machines is a year-round process. Video slot players are always eager to see what comes next as game designers put their imaginations to work, and what’s next from Aristocrat Techologies is The Romance of Fire and Rain. Aristocrat has long been known for its high-volatility games that give even penny players the chance at sizable jackpots. ... (read more)

Splitting 4s in blackjack

29 March 2015
QUESTION: I have a question about splitting 4s in blackjack. When I learned basic strategy, I memorized that you always split the 4s if the dealer has 5 or a 6. That’s what I’ve done for years and years. Lately I’ve been seeing others hitting instead of splitting, even guys I know a little bit. I never noticed them not splitting before. ... (read more)

Penny slots and combination betting

26 March 2015
QUESTION: My question has to do with the lack of single-line, 25-cent reel slot machines in many of the casinos I look to play at in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. They’re tough to find, the once popular Red White Blue, Wild Cherry and Double Diamond slots ... while rows and rows of various penny slots sit idle. ... (read more)
