The hierarchy of games

28 May 2015
My e-mail box reflects a certain hierarchy among casino games. I get more questions and comments about slot machines than anything else. Next come blackjack and video poker, because of their large elements of skill. But after that comes Three-Card Poker, which brings even more e-mail than traditional favorites craps and roulette. ... Royals, money lines and streaks

24 May 2015
QUESTION: I play 10-7-5 Double Bonus Video Poker. I kept track of how many hours I play before get a royal and it seems that I get them about every 100 to 110-plus hours of play. What I read before was that it should happen in 48+ hours of play. What are your thoughts on how many hours? ANSWER: It's partly dependent on how fast you play. ... (read more)

Fortune Pai Gow

17 May 2015
QUESTION: Can you explain the Fortune Pai Gow side bet? I’ve only played Pai Gow Poker a few times, and it’s easy enough once you get used to setting the hands. Last time I played, the table had the side bet, and some other players were making it. I didn’t, because I didn’t know if it was a good bet or not. ... (read more)

Winning on mistakes

17 May 2015
Winning is always a good feeling. Winning when you think you’ve made a very costly mistake – well, there’s a large dose of relief that goes with any extra cash. A reader recently sent me a story about a big win he’d witnessed that falls firmly in the extraordinary category. “An older woman is play was playing a Ten Play Poker slant top quarter machine behind me,” he wrote. ... Betting progressions

14 May 2015
Betting progressions are nothing new at blackjack. Ever since the game was devised, players have been trying to hit on a magic formula for when to increase their bets. Truth be told, there is no magic formula. Without a card counter’s knowledge of deck composition, raising and lowering your bets can’t dent the house edge. ... (read more)

Triple Play and five-spot blackjack

10 May 2015
QUESTION: I developed a new system last week. I put $200 into a Triple Play Double Double Bonus machine and played max bet at $1. I was done in about three minutes! I'm trying to figure out what to name the system. ANSWER: “Ouch!” seems like a good name, or “Off!” or “Kapow!” or any number of Batman TV on-screen expletives. ... (read more)

Hit that hand!

7 May 2015
QUESTION: I disagree with the basic strategy charts, mainly on one hand. When I have 16 and the dealer has a 7, it makes no sense to me to hit the hand. If the dealer doesn’t have a 10 or an Ace down, he has to hit and has a good chance of busting. What does make sense to me is standing and making the dealer ... (read more)

First-time players

3 May 2015
Casino players aren’t born knowing every rule and procedure in the books. Sometimes we run afoul of policies, especially when we first start to play and haven’t yet learned the casino facts of life. Do you remember a time when the rules took you by surprise? These players do: Vic: This was one of the first times I ever played table games. ... (read more)

Learning the casino landscape

30 April 2015
When I started writing about casinos in the early 1990s, I wanted to make sure I tried everything first-hand. I got up at 6 a.m. for a week and to attend a blackjack dealer training class, practicing shuffling and chip stacking with other students who would go on to complete six weeks and deal in the sponsoring casino. ... The bank in baccarat and Never Ever Craps

26 April 2015
QUESTION: The banker hand in baccarat wins more often than the player hand, right? So if there was no commission on winning banker bets, the player would have an edge. I remember being in a casino once that advertised 4 percent baccarat. What does that do to the house edge? It would make the banker bet really good, wouldn’t it? Also, I’ve heard of a game with no commission. ... (read more)
