John Grochowski Gaming Guru - Page 23Taking Down Place Bet of 6 or 813 September 2020
QUESTION: Is there a right time to take down your place bets on 6 and 8 in craps? I always leave my up until I win or lose. But I know these guys who are always taking their bets up and down. One takes his down whenever the shooter makes a point, even if it doesn’t affect his place bets. The other leaves his up, but has them not working on the comeout. ... (read more)
Soft 17: Hit or Stand?10 September 2020
There are times blackjack basic strategy plays don’t feel right, but they remain the best way to go. I recently had an extended email conversation with a player who called himself Acie. I have no idea if that’s real name or a gamblin’ moniker. Acie’s four emails boiled down to this: “I mostly play basic strategy, but some plays I don’t agree with. ... (read more)
Reel Spins6 September 2020
QUESTION: Does it help at all if I alter my timing in spinning the slot reels? I feel myself getting in patterns where I hit the button in the same rhythm time after time. Would it change things if every so often I took a sip of water or skipped a beat to watch the player next to me for a spin or two, or ... (read more)
The Question of Risk3 September 2020
House edges give us a basis for comparing one casino game to another, and for comparing different bets within the same game. But the edges by themselves don’t always give us a complete picture. Understanding your risk also must include speed of play. Some games play faster than others, and in craps, some bets are decided in fewer rolls and require more wagers per hour to stay in action. ... The Royal Flush Flush!30 August 2020
QUESTION: I’ve noticed something playing video poker. Every time I get four cards in a royal flush, I get an adrenaline rush before I hit the draw button. Really, though, it doesn’t turn into a royal all that often. My last royal was a two-card draw, and the one before that was a surprise with three cards. ... (read more)
Free Spins23 August 2020
QUESTION: I was playing slots online, and there was a free spin bonus where I wondered if your choices made a difference. A lot of the payback came on free spins. The minimum was eight spins, but 16 was pretty common and I got 32 a few times, 40 once and I think one was 96 spins. That was fun. Free spins paid double the usual, and when you got 16 or more spins, you were given a choice. ... (read more)
BJ Bob Returns20 August 2020
More than a month had passed since I last spoke with Blackjack Bob, so it was no surprise when the video conference request arrived. “I liked this a lot better when we used to run into each other at the casinos,” he said. “You were always there,” I replied. Bob laughed and said, “I hope we see those days again soon. ... (read more)
First Time Slot Play16 August 2020
QUESTION: You sometimes use first-time stories from slot players, but I don’t think I’ve had yours. Do you remember the first time you played the slots? Mine was in 2000, the year I turned 21. We had a family birthday party at a riverboat casino in Iowa. My mom, dad, sister, and a few aunts, uncles and cousins took me to dinner and bought me my first legal drink. ... (read more)
Gambling Talk13 August 2020
Joey is a friend of a friend, someone I usually see once or twice a year at barbecues. One thing I can count on: If we’re at the same party, Joey will corner me to talk gambling. There haven’t been any barbecues this summer, or any other gatherings of that circle of friends. So Joey contacted me online for a little chat. ... (read more)
Good Edge or Not?9 August 2020
QUESTION: Is the field bet a good bet or a bad bet? That 2.78 percent house edge doesn’t look too bad. It’s a lot better than placing 4 or 10 (6.67). It seems viable when you want to cover a lot of numbers. ANSWER: The field is a one-roll bet, which means you have to replenish your wagers a lot more often than on multi-roll bets such as pass or come, don’t pass or don’t come, and the place bets. ...
