You recently wrote about the courtesy and friendliness of the employees at one of the Illinois riverboats (Harrah's Joliet). I wish the same courtesy and friendliness could be practiced by some of the riverboat patrons. I find some players on some of the riverboats to be the rudest, crudest, most inconsiderate people I've every encountered. ... (read more)
I'm National, Fly Me22 July 1999
If first impressions were permanent, you'd be reading a very different column today. I'd been eagerly anticipating the launch of National Airlines, a new carrier designed to bring more flights to Las Vegas. It began service between Midway Airport and Las Vegas on May 27, and my wife and I gave it a try in June. ... (read more)
The Casino Answer Man20 July 1999
Are the paybacks higher on dollar machines or $5 machines than on quarter machines? Yes. The higher denomination you play, the higher the payback percentage. In the Chicago area, quarter slots average about 92 percent payback, dollars average about 95 percent and $5 machines average about 96 percent. ... (read more)

It always seems like when I play one coin in the slots, that's when I hit the jackpot, and when I play three coins I get nothing. Are the machines programmed to do that? No, your experience has just been coincidence. The combinations you see on the reels are determined by a computer program ... (read more)

I notice that you sometimes have Las Vegas datelines on your newspaper column. It seems often enough that you must go there several times a year. I'm wondering why you go there. Don't we have all the same games? Almost anything new in gaming is introduced in Las Vegas. For me to stay current for this column, several trips a year to Las Vegas are a must. ... (read more)
The Casino Answer Man (Triple Play Video Poker)8 July 1999
I believe your column about Triple Play Poker was misleading as it did not address four-of-a-kind payouts, which can be substantial. Example: Playing an IGT Triple Play machine with Double Double Bonus Poker, the idea is to get four of a kind. Let's say you're dealt King-King-3-3-X. The obvious ... (read more)

My wife and I went to the Par-A-Dice casino in East Peoria, Ill., and I was playing roulette. Sunday night I played at one table for five hours. I was sitting on the end where every employee passes to enter the pit. I had a piece of paper on which I was keeping track of the numbers, and I had a round copy of the wheel that I was reading and studying to pick my next bet. ... (read more)

My wife and I are frequent visitors to a casino that recently added IGT Vision Series slots. Enclosed is their advertisement. Note the machine on the front of the postcard, which was mailed to us and many of our friends. It shows a 25-cent Vision game. Upon my third visit this week, I cannot find a 25-cent Vision slot in this casino. ... (read more)
Slot Club Changes29 June 1999
If you're a member of a slot club at most casinos, you're used to instant access to cash rebates. Slide your card into a magnetic reader when you play slots or video poker, build points while you play, redeem points for a cash voucher at the slot club booth, exchange the voucher for cash at the cashier's cage. ... Upscale Resort at Summerlin24 June 1999
As Las Vegas continues to reinvent itself with the Venetian just open and Paris on its way, developers of The Resort at Summerlin are hoping that upscale travellers are ready to escape the hustle of the Strip for more elegant surroundings. Due to open June 29, The Resort is northwest of Las Vegas, about a 25-minute drive from the Strip. ... (read more)
