Almost anything new in gaming is introduced in Las Vegas. For me to stay current for this column, several trips a year to Las Vegas are a must. The distributor of my book Gaming: Cruising the Casinos is in Las Vegas, and I've made many friends there in my years of writing about casinos. Business and personal reasons aside, gambling in Las Vegas is a vastly different experience from a trip to the riverboats. Having dozens of casino hotels within walking distance of each other, each with their own shows, shops and restaurants, is reason enough. But just to focus on gaming, the player has a better shot to win there than in my home base near Chicago. In the games that give the educated player a chance to affect the outcome -- video poker and blackjack -- Las Vegas offers better pay tables and rules. In Las Vegas, I can play single-deck and double-deck blackjack with rules as good as those we see on six-deck and eight-deck games at Chicago area riverboats. I can choose casinos with several video poker games that offer better than 100 percent payback with expert play. I enjoy my trips to the riverboats, and I do visit every one within the Chicago area. But as a place to play, you can't beat Las Vegas. This article is provided by the Frank Scoblete Network. Melissa A. Kaplan is the network's managing editor.
