It was a Friday morning in Joliet, and I'd been playing a little video poker aboard Empress II, waiting for the 11 a.m. opening of Empress I and its video poker room. Soon, if it hasn't already happened by the time you read this, Empress' new barge will open, ending such little scheduling inconveniences, but on this day, I found myself passing time with a little quarter Triple Play Poker. ... Table Games Revenues12 August 2003
There's no doubt as to which table game is the most popular at Illinois casinos. It's blackjack, the same game that rules the pits in other gaming states. Of the 274 gaming tables in Illinois, 165 are blackjack tables. And of the $21.5 million state casinos earned on the tables in February, the last month for which a breakdown is available, $9.6 million, or 44 percent, came at blackjack. ... (read more)
Odd Blackjack Plays5 August 2003
Sitting at a blackjack table recently, I watched as a fellow customer
played solid basic strategy, with one little idiosyncrasy. Every time he
had hard 16 and the dealer had 7, he stood.
I keep quiet when I see others making basic strategy mistakes--they bet
their money, they can make their own decisions. ... (read more)

Q. Recently, you recommended an e-book by Steve Gibbs, which I ordered
due to your glowing recommendation.
I found the material to be somewhat uninspiring and basically not
really anything new. Also, after some disappointing results using

Bad Days at the Casino22 July 2003
Every so often, readers send me tales of big wins, back-to-back
jackpots, comebacks--their best days at the casinos. Those are the days
every player likes to relive.
Then there are the days we'd like to forget. I don't hear about these as
often, but they happen to everyone. ... (read more)
Blackjack-Derived Games15 July 2003
When casinos offer blackjack side bets designed to pad their advantage,
as described here last week, players have a simple defense: Don't make
the side bet.
It's a little trickier when the extra house edge is built into the basic
game. Blackjack players ... (read more)
Blackjack Side Bets8 July 2003
Blackjack presents casino operators with something of a puzzle. It's the
most popular casino table game, and has been since it overtook craps
roughly 40 years ago. But it also has a low house edge, half a percent
or so with a basic strategy that's not all that difficult to learn.

Q. I took an interest in roulette about six years ago, and I've seen a
lot of things happen in that time. What I find fascinating is when a
streak of red or black starts going more than four or five spins.
People will bet like mad, trying to guess when the streak will stop. ... (read more)
Comps - Beyond the Basics24 June 2003
The basics of getting complimentary meals, services and even cash back
from casinos are pretty easy, as we discussed last week. Sign up for a
player rating card, use it while you play, and the comps will come.
Comps are based on your theoretical losses. ... (read more)
Comps - The Basics17 June 2003
A colleague of mine likes to refer to casino comps as "free stuff." And
for those who know their basic strategy in blackjack, optimal strategies
for certain video poker games and who know how comping systems work, the
"stuff" really is free--the value ... (read more)
