3-5-7 Poker

28 October 2003
When a new table game is ready for prime time, the most likely breakout spots are the jurisdictions with the most table space available. That usually means Nevada or Mississippi. So it goes with 3-5-7 Poker, now being played--where else?--in a few Nevada casinos and a few in Mississippi. Player response so far has been good. ... (read more)

Grochowski Sevens Out

21 October 2003
In a room full of craps shooters, I had some face-saving to do. It was the no-sevens contest, the final event of the Golden Touch Craps seminar, where Frank Scoblete and crew were tutoring potential dice controllers. I was far from the star pupil. In the first round of the no-sevens contest, I managed a 7 on my first roll. ... (read more)

Online Video Poker

14 October 2003
When the video slot revolution began a few years ago, I used to get questions from befuddled readers all the time. They'd ask how to trigger a bonus round, or how the bonus worked once they reached the second screen, or just how they could tell they'd won with all those lines and symbols. I don't get such questions that often anymore. ... (read more)

The World's Best" Craps System?

7 October 2003
One recent morning, it seemed as though my e-mail box was filled to the brim with craps systems--along with questions about admission charges, now that they've returned to Hollywood Casino in Aurora. We looked at one system last week. This time, let's check out one that came with the intriguing subject ... (read more)

Craps Systems

30 September 2003
Craps players love systems, trying to mix and match bets in hopes of finding the magical formula that will beat the casino. Just about any system will work sometimes, and when a player wins with a system, it encourages another try, and another, and another. In the long run, of course, the casino comes out on top. ... A Shuffle through the Gaming Mailbag: Tax Hike in Illinois, State-Run Casinos

23 September 2003
Q. I read a report that said Hollywood Casino in Aurora was eliminating table games because of the increase in the Illinois gaming tax (hiking the gaming tax to 70 percent on revenues in excess of $250 million a year). Can they do that? Doesn't the state require that a casino have so many tables and so many slots? Bob, via e-mail A. ... (read more)

New Slots at Trump Casino in Gary

16 September 2003
For the last several weeks, Trump Casino in Gary has been trumpeting its 515 new slot machines. All casinos change games from time to time, mostly by switching software and glass on machines already on the floor. The Trump shift is something different. There's been some software shifting, changing over some of its former video slot games to add more video poker. ... (read more)

The New Empress is Empressive

9 September 2003
From the time Empress in Joliet first announced it was remodeling a barge to replace its Empress I and Empress II riverboats, I was a little wary of the project. After all, this was a scaled-back plan, a substitute for a more expensive construction of a new barge that was scrubbed last year when Illinois raised its maximum gaming tax to 50 percent of revenue. ... A Shuffle through the Video Poker Mailbag

2 September 2003
A shuffle through the Gaming mailbag, which is stuffed with video poker questions: Q. I was interested in your column recent column on Multi Strike Poker. Does it make any difference where you play, or are the games the same? Vicki, via e-mail A. It does make a difference. I made my way to Joliet, Illinois, recently, and recorded the pay tables at the Empress and Harrah's casinos there. ... (read more)

John Grochowski Reviews Owning Mahowny

26 August 2003
When I popped a preview copy of Owning Mahowny into my VCR, my mission was to see whether the gambling, and the portrayal of a problem gambler's descent into bank embezzlement to the tune of $10 million, rang true. I knew it was based on a true story. In the early 1980s, Toronto banker Brian Molony ... (read more)
