Combination bets are usually bad bets

28 June 2011
Roulette and craps are very different games, but they have something in common: a large number of betting options, leading to players trying to figure out combinations of wagers that will guarantee success. They'll try to use one bet to cover up the weakness in another. It doesn't really work that way. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

26 June 2011
Q. I sometimes play in an Indian casino where they have the Class II games. You know, the ones that look like regular slots, except there's a little area where they show bingo numbers. I know you're really playing bingo against other players in those games, no matter what the rest of the game looks like. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

23 June 2011
Q. I have heard a couple things concerning video poker. First is that royal flushes hit roughly every 48,000 spins. I also have heard that when a machine is not being played, that it still continues to "spin" maybe hundreds of times per minute. Does that mean that a video poker machine may hit another royal flush maybe a few days after it hits? A. ... (read more)

Don't play when blackjacks pay 6-5

21 June 2011
As rules change in blackjack, so does our best strategy. In a six-deck game, basic strategy calls for doubling down on 11 against any dealer face-up card if the dealer hits soft 17, but not to double down against an ace if the dealer stands on all 17s. In a six-deck game, we'll never split a pair of 4s if ... (read more)

Playing Pick'Em Poker

20 June 2011
It was just like old times, staying and playing in Las Vegas with my dad Jerry and brother Jay. It used to be an annual tradition, until Jay's kids and mine got to the age where school activities were taking too much of our time for a guys-only getaway. We were staying at Boyd Gaming's Fremont in Las Vegas' older, downtown area. ... (read more)

Ultimate X video poker

14 June 2011
It was destined to be a low roller kind of morning as I strolled into a casino with $42 in my wallet, and I knew my gaming would be limited at best. A short bankroll meant I had to walk past the table games pit, past the dollar slots and video poker, and not even think about a stop at the poker room. ... (read more)

Short payoffs matter

31 May 2011
It was a relatively quiet afternoon on an Internet message board, and the talk turned to blackjack. One regular weighed in about what a good time he has playing a single-deck game. "I just like single decks and playing third base where I can see the cards that have already been used," he wrote. "At least ... (read more)

Different pay tables require different strategies

24 May 2011
Different video poker games, and different pay tables within the same game theme, have different payback percentages. That's not because the odds of drawing any particular hand are different in one game than another. It's down to two factors: Some games pay more on winning hands than others, and player strategy changes to account for those differences in payoffs. ... (read more)

If slots are random, then . . .

17 May 2011
Not a month goes by that I don't receive at least one e-mail with a slot machine question that starts, "If your randomness theory is correct, then . . . " I have to issue a disclaimer. That slot machine results are determined by random number generators is not my theory. It's not a theory at all. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

10 May 2011
Q. I was surprised to find a Three Card Poker game that was hand-dealt, going around the table in order just like regular poker. At most other casinos, it is machine-dealt in groups of three cards going around the table with the dealer last. Is there any difference in the odds based on these two different ... (read more)
