A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

4 August 2011
Q. My wife and I are having a discussion about quarter Double Double or Triple Double Bonus Poker. I think Triple Double takes your money a lot faster than Double Double. She likes the big payouts on aces w/kicker and 2, 3, 4 w/kicker. Which one do you suggest playing? A. Triple Double does take your money faster. ... (read more)

All about 100x odds

2 August 2011
Of all the most popular casino table games, craps seems the most mystifying to casual players. I often hear from players who tell me they just can't understand what's going on at the craps tables. And of all the things casual players don't understand about craps, it seems they don't understand the free odds most of all. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

28 July 2011
Q. I thoroughly enjoyed your description of the "The Hangover" machine. It sounds more like a video game than a slot machine. I have a question though. Why does it sound like you had any control over the outcome of your winnings when you "touched a sword and revealed a 160-credit award"? In previous ... (read more)

Basic strategy does not assume the dealer has a ten

26 July 2011
It was time for a get-together with my old blackjack-playing buddy Bob. I've mentioned him before. We'll talk about kids — and in his case, grandkids — baseball and life in general, just like normal people. But at some point, a blackjack issue always pops up. "You know me," he said. "I've played basic strategy for about a hundred years, and have picked up some wrinkles beyond the basics. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

21 July 2011
Q. I usually play Double Bonus Poker, and have always held one face card, choosing one at random when several are dealt, if there is no chance of a straight or a flush. Many times that one will pair up to save my bet. Is this wrong? Does it limit my winning other hands? A. Strategies vary by ... (read more)

Double Attack Blackjack

19 July 2011
Blackjack players feel pretty good about their hands when the dealer has a 5 or 6 face up. Some even refer to the them as "bust cards," although even with 5 or 6 up, the dealer still makes hands of 17 or better more often than not. What if the dealer got his or her up card first, before dealing to ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

14 July 2011
Q. I recently came away completely puzzled by an occurrence on a video slot machine. The machine offers exorbitant promises of large bonus jackpots. After about 25 minutes, the bonus feature finally arrived. The award was six free spins, and the net result was an 85-cent payout. I have recently noticed that many of the newer slots offer free spins as the bonus and then proceed to hose you. ... (read more)

Dealing with Deuces Wild pay tables

12 July 2011
It's a basic principle of video poker that changes low on the pay table make a bigger impact than changes on bigger-paying hand. That's because smaller-paying hands come up a LOT more often than the big poppers. That doesn't mean the smart video poker player ignores the payoffs on big hands and focuses on choosing games with the right small pays. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

7 July 2011
Q. I don't believe that the odds are really the same after a big win on a slot machine. I've been playing slots for 30 years, and I've had my share of jackpots. Not once have I ever had another jackpot on the next spin. Almost every spin after a jackpot has been a loser. No matter what you say, I think slot machines adjust and change the odds after they pay a jackpot. ... (read more)

Hanging with The Hangover slot

5 July 2011
I've never seen The Hangover. You might think anything with an iconic "Vegas, baby!" trek would be automatic for me, but life fills up, and this is one movie I missed. The Hangover slot machine is another matter. I make it my business to check out as many new casino games as I can. I'd seen The Hangover in demo mode at Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas last fall. ...
