A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

13 October 2011
Q. I have a question about the random number generator in slot machines. If there are 1,000 possible combinations, does the random number generator have to choose them all before there can be a new cycle? If that's the case, then wouldn't you want to leave a machine after a big hit, since that combination wouldn't be available? A. ... (read more)

Why players like video slots

11 October 2011
It was mid-afternoon on a Monday, and I was waiting to check into a Las Vegas hotel. Just in front of me were four older folks, two men and two women, and they were talking slots. "I can't believe how many people are playing those video slots," said one tall, thin, white-haired gentleman. "There's nothing more boring than a video slot machine." I decided to get the other side first-hand. ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

6 October 2011
Q. We just returned from a cruise and spent a limited time in the casino. One question I have is about playing video poker. When I place my bet, they take that amount from my bankroll. If I lose, the money has already been taken, OK. But, if I win, and the odds were 1-1, I get my money back, hence I haven't won anything. ... (read more)

There's experience, and then there's experience

4 October 2011
There's no substitute for experience, or so says an old adage. And experience does help at the blackjack table. Knowing the game, rules and procedures puts the experienced player a jump ahead of the novice. But there's experience, and then there's experience. I was playing a little $10 a hand ... A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

29 September 2011
Q. A fellow video poker player told me that, by Illinois law, video poker machines cannot have a pay table set to produce a 100% or higher return. I made an attempt to go though the Illinois Gaming Board site but got lost. Thought you might know the answer to that question. A. Your friend is correct. ... (read more)

A visit to WMS

27 September 2011
A visit to WMS Gaming's facilities in Chicago always has a touch of the fantastic about it, a little escape from the real world. That's double true as the annual Global Gaming Expo approaches, when the innovative slotmaker is putting the finishing touches on the games it will showcase to casino ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

22 September 2011
Q. Some friends and I have a weekly poker game, and we have a question. Mostly we play ordinary stuff, with a lot of Hold'em and seven-card stud. Sometimes we have the high and low hands split the pot. We don't go crazy with wild cards, except on the last hand of the night. For that, we play this goofy seven-card stud game with nine wild cards. ... (read more)

A guaranteed way to lose at roulette

20 September 2011
Nearly every wager on a double-zero roulette table gives the house a 5.26% edge. It makes no difference whether you bet single numbers or 18-number combinations such as red or black, or anything in between. As long as you steer clear of the five-number bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, where the house edge soars to ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

15 September 2011
Q. I was told I could no longer play at a casino where my wife and I have played a long time. They were nice about it, and told me I could play other games or "enjoy our other amenities," but that I was too tough for them at blackjack. Still, it made me mad. I only spread $10 to $50, and play about a break-even game. ... (read more)

Enduring slot themes

13 September 2011
If you're a slot player, you know the drill. A hot new game catches your eye. You give it a try — and you like it. You like the game play, you like the bonus rounds, maybe you have a couple of pretty good wins. You seek out the game each time you go to the casino. You become old friends. And then one day ...
