A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

17 November 2011
Q. If a player betting two spots must double the minimum bet at blackjack, does that mean playing two spots instead of one is an advantage to the player? Since my wife and I always gamble together (and there's no her money/his money, it's all our money), should we always play two spots by sitting next to ... (read more)

Playing video poker with the locals

15 November 2011
Two to four times a year, I find myself in Las Vegas. It's mostly business — and I've even convinced my wife of that — but I make a little time to play. And in the interest of getting the best blackjack rules and best video poker pay tables, I take my play away from the Strip, to places where the locals ... (read more)

2011 Global Gaming Expo, part 6

10 November 2011
I've known Joe Awada since the late 1990s when I was asked to look in at the Sahara in Las Vegas, where his new table game was on the floor. It was at Lenny Frome's urging that I went — and more about Lenny in a minute. Over the years, I've enjoyed Awada's fun little twists on table games, such as the ... (read more)

What Bally hasn't done a great deal with ... (read more)

2011 Global Gaming Expo, part 3

1 November 2011
Casinos are always looking for ways to drive repeat business, to entice players to come again. International Game Technology has come up with a video poker variation that certainly would keep me coming back, provided the casino put a high enough pay table on the game to attract my business in the first ... In the last three years, Incredible Technologies has captured the casino industry's attention with its Magic Touch line of creative games with a difference. 2011 Global Gaming Expo, part 1

25 October 2011
For three days, I watched the hunters stalking their prey. They'd raise their rifles, fire, lights would flash . . . and bonus credits would appear on the screen. "We're kind of blurring the line between the slot and the arcade game," said Boris Hallerbach, Megajackpots product manager for International ... (read more)

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

20 October 2011
Q. I was playing craps, and some of the others were playing something called the "Fire Bet." When the shooter made a point, they'd put a fire disk on that point. Once the shooter made a couple of points, the guys started to get excited, but I think I only saw it pay off once. I didn't know anything about it, so I stayed away, figured I'd learn something about it before I got involved. ... (read more)

Casinos can't change slot paybacks easily

18 October 2011
When a casino changes its blackjack rules, or the type of shuffler used, or the number of decks in play, it's right there in the open. Players can evaluate the game by what they see. Same deal in video poker. When a game is changed, players can look at the new pay table and know exactly what kind of play experience they're getting. ... (read more)
