Spin a little dream with me

17 March 2013
QUESTION: I’ve noticed on a lot of video slot games that if I hit the button a second time while the reels are spinning, they stop right away. I was wondering if I could use this to my advantage. If I see the bonus triggers or the jackpot symbols at the top, should I quick, hit the button again and try to stop the reels? ANSWER: This has become one of the slot questions I’m asked most often. ... (read more)

Gambling scoreboards

14 March 2013
It was a Thursday evening, and I was walking through a casino with my friend Alex while our wives were playing the slots. Alex sticks to table games, mostly blackjack, and we were checking out blackjack house rules, craps odds, table minimums and other playing conditions. As we walked past the roulette ... Which is better? Blackjack, roulette or baccarat?

10 March 2013
QUESTION: I'm a sports gambler, very little experience with table games. I usually stick to roulette. How does that rank among good or bad bets? I’m also curious as to which game you would recommend? Baccarat or blackjack for a newer table game player? Both seem simple enough I guess, just don't want to lose my shirt – ha ha. ... (read more)

Are slots really random?

7 March 2013
A couple of years ago, I wrote a column on the theme, “If slots are really random …” It was sparked by readers who wondered how a casino exec could anticipate a big jackpot night if his games were random. The reason was simple: A big crowd meant more people playing, and more opportunities for both wins and losses. ... (read more)

Play the don't pass just right

3 March 2013
QUESTION: On my last trip to the craps table, the table was cold so I switched from playing the pass line to playing the don’t pass line. Of course my friends hated me. When a point was established I did not lay the odds. My friends told me I was stupid for not laying the odds. I disagreed and gave them this ... (read more)

It's good to get beat bad!

28 February 2013
When Patrick Farrell of Farmingdale, N.Y., saw the river card complete his straight flush to the 8 of spades, he had every right to be elated. A nice $620 pot was at stake in the $1-$2 No Limit Hold’em game at the Tropicana in Atlantic City. What he got was so much more. It turned out that while Farrell ... (read more)

Best video poker play and being a comp wizard

24 February 2013
QUESTION: Please explain a piece of video poker strategy to me. I’ve heard that when you have a low pair and a high card, like two 6s and a jack, you’re supposed to keep the pair and throw away the jack. That doesn’t make any sense to me. Don’t you have a lot more chances to draw a winner if you hold the Jack? You get four cards, and only one of them has to match up to win. ... (read more)

Those killer soft 17s at blackjack

21 February 2013
I was playing blackjack, whiling away the time before lunch at a $10 table while my wife played penny slots. It was a pretty non-descript six-deck game, with the dealer hitting soft 17 but double downs allowed on any first two cards. Players could split pairs up to three times for a total of four hands. ... Missing those real coin slots

17 February 2013
QUESTION: I miss the coins in the slot machines. There was nothing better than a big win and hundreds of coins pouring out. Is there any chance we could get those kinds of games back into casinos? ANSWER: Unlikely at best. There are too many advantages for casinos in paying off in tickets rather than coins or tokens. ... (read more)

The casino slot Sybil

14 February 2013
My casino play has a bit of a split personality. Multiple personalities, to be more accurate. When I’m playing for recreation, I want games that give me the best shot to win. So you’ll find me playing blackjack, video poker when I can find good pay tables, and occasionally craps. When I put on my writer’s hat, I play a little of everything. ... (read more)
